I really think you need to stop being so literal minded. You might come off as a bit less of a jackass.
if you said "“I’m sure bricklayers will continue their hate-flinging, divisive ugliness, because that’s pretty much all they’ve got left”. then I would think you meant ALL bricklayers. end. Fuill stop.
The message was not “Republicans showed up at my home this morning”. It was ““I’m sure Republicans will continue their hate-flinging, divisive ugliness, because that’s pretty much all they’ve got left”.”
That’s some real nuanced thinking you got there.
Creative. What’s next “Your ugly and your mama dresses you funny”?
Once again, really? I would assume it to mean the bricklayer’s union, or the bricklayers in my town, or spokespersons for the bricklayers, or even a vocal majority of bricklayers. I think most reasonable people would assume something similar.
Probably not. Hentor has a better command of punctuation than that.
Yeah, it sure doesn’t compare with “stupid fucking revisionist cockwart” or “JFK memorial dildo,” I’ll grant you.
Well that’s kinda MY point. We have a thread where one chromosonally-challenged republican asshat is being used to represent all republicans (or if this makes you follow my thinking better, all republican politicians… cuz even THAT isn’t true.).
I used Der Trihs as a provocative example of a nut job liberal who says really stupid things. I wouldn’t necessarily call him representative of all liberal posters on the SDMB anymore than I would call Hayes representative of all Republican politicians.
What I am saying is that there are MANY nut jobs of all stripes out there. Left-Wing, Right-Wing, No-Wing, Dorsal-Winged, whatever. Recognize all nut jobs for what they are and leave the broad brush in the paint bucket.
Perhaps I’m overgeneralizing here, but right now I’m thinking that Republicans are hypersensitive whiny bitches.
…and I would argue that isn’t necessarily the case. In a thread that went three pages, a conservative poster (the right-wing version of Der Trihs, I might add) posted the popular meme about Obama with some apparent support of that position (disclaimer: I do not subscribe that Obama supporters believe him the Messiah.). The hue and cry was to not paint a broad brush cuz of the ranting of a lunatic.
SO ya know… don’t paint a broad brush cuz of the rantings of a lunatic.
Says the pot to the kettle…
That was my thought when McCain was whining about their tacticts being compared to George Wallaces (or whatever the fuck) at the same time his supporters yelling “terrorist” and “Kill him” about Obama.
I agree with you about that. But a lot of the rhetoric we are seeing is coming right from the top. While it would be unfair to characterize all Republicans as whiny jerkwads, a fair number that represent (or claim to) the party fit that description.
If I claimed that the Chinese are communists, I’m not saying that every person of Chinese ancestry is a communist, right? But my observation is still sound.
But I guess that’s the problem. That is what’s happening. Just like when conservative posters piss and moan about the dishonest debating tactics of liberal posters on this board. These conservatives may not mean every single one, but there is a fair amount of liberals that do to call liberal posters “Communists” (to use your example.) But then again comes the hue and cry to not paint all liberal posters as “Communists” because of a vocal minority.
Thanks for understanding what 99% of people who aren’t blind with ignorance can see, tdn. I pitted one Republican politician, referred to two others who work directly with or for McCain, and then went on to discuss “Republicans” in the context of those who are in the business of representing their party and/or candidate. Naturally, CircleofWillis is trying to distract from the real topic by tu quoqueing all over the place, because that’s pretty much all he can do.
This is pretty typical of people like Circle on the right – oops, sorry, let me be as specific as possible lest others misunderstand me, I mean a subset of the rightwing posters found on the Straight Dope Message Board owned by Creative Loafing, particularly those of the genus Republicanus Asstardus, who since they can do nothing to actually defend the bigwigs of their party, must waste everyone’s time by trying to play “gotcha” through ridiculous cherrypicking and twisting and willfully misrepresenting the opposition’s words.
I suggest not responding to him anymore. He’s deluded, desperate, resentful, and generally snarling like a cornered rat. Rather like McCain, in fact. He’s dismissing the original comments as “the rantings of a lunatic” when in fact they come from an elected politician, building on the words of another elected representative and the Vice Presidential candidate, not to mention McCain’s own spokesperson. One person’s remarks I can dismiss as a lunatic; all these remarks coming within less than a week of one another are clearly coordinated tactics. That’s the Official Republican Party talking point this week. Handwave all you want, mister, but like it or lump it, they’re the official stance of this party.
But do you mean all McCains, or…
As someone with Irish ancestry, I resent that!
But… Hayes is a representative! That’s literally the name of his job! He’s a member of the House of Representatives, a position he holds because a majority of voters in his district feel that he represents them! Certainly, there are a lot of Republicans (even Republican politicians) who aren’t like him, but he still speaks to a sufficient percentage of the Republican base to get him into elected office. Comparing that to Der Trihs is absurd. No, Der Trihs isn’t the only liberal nutjob on the internet, or even on this message board. But there’s a pretty fucking huge difference between “nutjob on the internet,” and “nutjob in Congress.” Liberal nutjobs tend to be the former. Conservative nutjobs have a high incidence of the latter. And while that doesn’t paint every single individual Republican in a bad light, it doesn’t say much good about the Republicans in general.
The technical term is Randroid.
If you’d read what I wrote, you’ll notice that the part that is offensive to me is the Robin Hood aspect–Obama wants to raise taxes on the rich for the purpose of making cash payments to the poor. And then he calls the whole thing a tax cut for 95 percent of Americans.
Fight my ignorance here – what sort of cash payments does he want to make to the poor?
