It’s not about protecting people who happen to also be women, it’s about power over people, territoriality (protecting “our” women), and enforcing rigid gender roles.
It’s not so so much that they consider transmen to be women as it doesn’t really occur to them that transmen even exist combined with the belief that transgendered people aren’t really people at all. “Protecting women” just sounds better with audiences “it can go putside like an animal”.
Bigots just don’t want people different from them to exist at all.

Also, there is a longstanding patriarchal presumption among sexist transphobes that “chivalry” doesn’t apply to women who have transgressed certain norms of female behavior.

I can’t think of anybody I know IRL who identifies as transgender.
For me this is possibly a side effect of dropping out of college and living in a heavy Republican area with an unusually old population. But as recently as one year ago less than half of Americans were polled as knowing someone who is transgender, and less than half of Americans agreed that a person’s gender could be separate from the sex assigned at birth.

Coastal CA, but a friend of my 23yo son transitioned, and I know 3 trans people including a woman I’m dating. I’m appalled that transphobia is the new “gay people want only to recruit or molest your kids” fad revived from the 80’s.
We’ve obviously come a long way since the 80s, but “gay people want only to recruit or molest your kids” is making the rounds again after it actually happened in our community.

You PM’d me an article about a quite creepy male high school teacher who eventually dated a then-18yo (adult!!) male student. I mean, so what? Would it have been okay if the 18yo were a different gender? I don’t know how that even speaks to sexual orientation or gender issues. The solution to creeps in a school system isn’t to suppress orientation or transgender folk. It’s to suppress creeps.
