Republicans' war on transgender people: Omnibus thread

…it’s coming faster than anyone here is really prepared for. We are past the point where we can expect the extremist states to pull back. They will push LGBTQ people out of the public space. Take away their health care. Make it socially acceptable to report them. This isn’t some future event. This is right now. It gets worse from here.

Ahem:

I do not have access to the list of minorities to be targeted and in which order that will happen, but while I am confident “Jews” appear somewhere on that list I am equally confident they are not first.

I also expect many other groups on that list, such as Black, Muslim, Immigrant, Democrats, etc. I just don’t know in which order they will be targeted.

True. So many “others”, so little time…

The WWII Nazis did target LGBTQ+ people as well as Jews, Romany, Communists, etc. The classification system was extensive and elaborate.

QFT

This is accelerating.

Agreed, with despair. At this point, anyone who isn’t horrified is either willfully not paying attention or cheerfully in agreement.

You know a lot of my friends and family used to think I was crazy and little paranoid; when about the time grinder started being a thing. I warned them about using the app because it tracks their personal habits. And all it takes is for some shit head “conservative Christian” in some state legislature to pass a law re-criminalizing homosexuality or a Supreme Court ruling undoing Lawrence v Texas.

And then for some enterprising conservative DA somewhere to subpoena Grinder or any other dating app for a neatly well documented and accurate list of all of the Gays, and their activities; in his or her jurisdiction…

I think we’re about to go through the second lavender scare. Everyone that has resources should get ready to go to friendly states* or Canada or to Europe when it happens. Because we’re at the point of “when” and not “if” unfortunately.

  • I know it sounds even more ridiculous and paranoid; but I wouldn’t put it past a “conservative” state to try and pass legislation in form of a “fugitive gays act” to force accepting states to allow bounty hunters to return those that fled persecution. And I’m not sure going to California or New York would be enough to get away from them…

Sorry for the rant… I’m going to be putting my tinfoil hat back on now.

Not paranoid at all, what with Texas (it was Texas, right?) passing a law prohibiting a woman in Texas traveling out of state to get an abortion and saying a Texas citizen could, say, sue a doctor in New Jersey who provide a woman from Texas with an abortion.

So… that shit is already happening, to women of reproductive age if not specifically to homosexual and/or transgender people.

For the Rabid Right “states’ rights” means they want their states to have the right to dictate to your state, regardless of what the people in your state might or might not want.

Unfortunately, no other nation wants someone of my age who isn’t also bringing with them a pile of money and/or esoteric skill in high demand. I’m trapped in the US regardless of what goes on. No one wants refugees. If the younger folks who are endangered can escape I wish them well.

Yes it is Texas that has that law. And from what I remember. The law gave standing to anyone in Texas to sue anyone that remotely had anything to do with said abortion… like the Uber driver who took you to the airport to catch the flight to get the procedure. I think They snuck in some other nasty things about who pays for the trial and win or lose and that if you lose you can be continually sued for the same amount until you pay the first judgment and some really good compassionate Christian shit like that.

Easier said than done. Moving to another state is easy enough, but other countries have immigration requirements. A friend who was worried enough to invest half a million dollars to get Portuguese residency just lost out, because his lawyer was too slow and Portugal changed the rules.

Wouldn’t be ironic if Cuba threw open their doors to us…as away to give the finger to the republicans…

This sort of thing keeps happening. You’d think even people this stupid would eventually learn…

A Missouri government tip site for submitting complaints and concerns about gender-affirming care is down after people flooded it with fanfiction, rambling anecdotes and the “Bee Movie” script…

The genocidal fascists keep hoping to bring the majority onto their side. They get frustrated when it becomes apparent their tactics aren’t working the way they had hoped.

Is there any particular significance of the Bee Movie script being included? That seems a very weird choice.

Nothing specifically related to trans stuff. Having a bunch of people upload the same thing to the website is a good way of showing that this was an organized effort. Bee Movie got picked because it’s a popular source of internet weirdness.

Fair enough. Thanks for the elaboration.

I would have been tempted to send the press clippings and video from the time that Donald Trump motorboated Rudy Guiliani in drag.

Clarification- Guiliani was the one in drag. I’m not really sure, linguistically, if it was Trump or Guiliani doing the motorboating.

It might be tempting, but I’m actually glad that, as I understand it, there was a conscious choice to not send in reports of actual people. I don’t think pointing out hypocrisy ever works against the right anyway.

I’m heartbroken and scared. I mostly grew up in Florida. And it sucked for a queer, gender nonconforming kid. My one refuge was to go to the beach, which I did a ton in high school when things were the worst for me. I moved away for college and got to be my authentic self.

Now I have a family, and I’ve been able to return to visit with family in Florida by renting a place at the beach and inviting them to come hang with us there.

I’d planned a trip for this summer. We rented a big place at a favorite beach. And now we’re going to cancel it. I’m genderqueer/transmasc, and one of my kids is nonbinary.

I never thought it would come to this, but it’s gotten so crazy. Laws allowing the state to take trans kids away if the parents approve of gender affirming care. Bathroom laws (which always seem to forget that trans-masculine people exist). Drag show laws that are so ambiguous that butch women and trans people don’t know if they can be in public. And that’s just the laws. Harassment has gone way up I hear. I just don’t feel safe.

I was fortunate in that way white male-presenting folk usually are in this country. I grew up with my slate of personal miseries and anxieties but I didn’t have to worry that I’d be executed by the police or shipped off to a camp or denied medical care in an emergency…

When I came out and started transition, I did so at a time of increased optimism. There were suddenly trans celebrities. More and more healthcare providers were covering transition-related care. Public opinion polling looked genuinely rosy, relatively speaking, and the collective social etiquette was shifting such that misgendering folk was considered uncivil. I really thought things might be ok.

“So much,” said the Golux, “For that.”

Alas, that is exactly what they want: to terrorize you into hiding and be able again to pretend, and teach their children, that this does not exist.

Got to say: the sheer disproportionate hysterical viciousness of the backlash is astounding.

But then I get to thinking… their mentality is one which especially relishes finding soneone in such a position of vulnerable weakness that they can inflict maximum abuse with impunity. So they can make an example to others to know and stay in their place.

And it may hurt to say it… but… they knew they could get away with it. They knew that many those who would normally be allies in a struggle over human rights, the members of racial and ethnic and religious minorities… look upon you as abominations. That many who would normally be about the agency of consenting adults as long as they don’t hurt others… throw all reason or skepticism out the window the moment someone lies “they’re coming for the children”.

What a piece of work… SMH

Yeah, it was a really hard call to make in some ways. But, when it puts my family at risk, and would make my vacation potentially miserable, it isn’t such a hard call after all.

And they’ll think they’re winning, but we know they’re really losers, in multiple ways.

Oh for sure, you don’t go serving yourself to terrorists on a silver platter. You want to outlast them and see them fail.
