Officially: Orange Trans is the new black Black.
Transgender activist and cartoonist Sophie LaBelle has posted a comic about this topic.
"Starting in 1936, German police officers were prohibited from giving firearm licenses to Jewish people. In November 1938, owning firearms was made entirely illegal to them.
"This was right before Kristallnacht.
"Now it’s 2025, and the American Department of Justice is reportedly looking into ruling trans people mentally unfit to own guns.
"But this isn’t just about the guns. It’s also about legal infantilization. It’s about opening a breach and normalizing discrimination on the premise that trans people are incapable of reason.
“If they find that transness makes us ‘mentally incompetent,’ they could go after our jobs, our professional licenses, our housing, our medical decisions, our children…”
‘Oh wait, they’re already doing that…’
A few months ago I recall a few Dopers insisting that Trump’s administration might be very bad on trans rights, but it was ridiculous hyperbole to say they wanted to kill all trans people.
To those and any other snowflakes about the word “genocide” - it’s not brought up with flippancy. It’s brought up because the time to avoid and prevent genocide is before the genocide. If the parallels between the Nazis and this administration aren’t clear enough to you, it’s either because you’re blind or join them in their hatred.
We should call this willful blindness to looming genocide Niemöllerism (Niemöllerist/s), if it isn’t called that already.
It’ll be interesting to see if the NRA has anything to say about this. I suspect the answer is no. While I had given up on the NRA years ago because of their fearmongering, they really pissed me off in 2016 when they remained silent about the death of Philando Castile in Florida. Castile, who had a permit to carry a concealed handgun, was pulled over by police. Even though he told the officer he had a pistol, the officer got scared, shot Castile a few times, and killed him. The NRA as an organization didn’t have any meaningful response even after the officer was acquitted which should demonstrate they’re selective about who they think should have guns.
Oh, that’s still being argued.
What they’re talking about now is worse than the Mulford Act. The Mulford Act certainly had the intent to disarm Black people, but at least that wasn’t actually coded into the law itself. What the DOJ is doing is trying to enact into law something explicitly targeted at transgender people, not something that “wink wink, nudge nudge” takes away their rights.
What’s even worse is that they’re trying to codify into law the idea that being trans means having gender dysphoria. (Therefore they can claim that all trans people are mentally ill and unable to legally possess a gun.) The irony of course is that Republicans are very actively pushing laws that are more likely to cause gender dysphoria by taking away the availability of gender-affirming care.
Also, per the CNN article:
From January 2013 to the present, of the more than 5,700 mass shootings in America (defined as four or more victims shot and killed), five shooters were confirmed as transgender, said Mark Bryant, founding executive director of the Gun Violence Archive.
So let’s pass a law that might have had a chance to prevent 0.0009% of all mass shootings since 2013, and all we have to do is further stigmatize (by law) an already oppressed minority. This is something that goes well beyond taking away the right to carry a weapon, and could potentially affect every aspect of a trans person’s life.
I’ve posted this quote a number of times,
“Transgenderism must be eradicated from public life entirely–the whole preposterous ideology, at every level."
– Michael Knowles, CPAC conference, March 2023
but it never got the reaction I thought it should.
Because this,
“Judaism must be eradicated from public life entirely–the whole preposterous ideology, at every level."
– Not Michael Knowles, Not CPAC conference, March 2023
is the same sentiment.
Frighteningly the list conservatives/Republicans have of groups that can replace the first word is not short.
I mean there is a lot about the Trumpian logic (and the right wing scare tactics before him) that are deeply illogical in ways that confound!
Using statistics, drawn from the unlikely source, Trump, gun owners make up 32% of the population. This is from an older Gallup Poll, from 202O.
Let us estimate the number of trans people. That is 0.8% of the population, according to the Williams Institute at UCLA.
So if we make a leap of logic, and conclude that all trans people who fit in the same Venn diagram as gun owners, we get 32% of 0.8% of the population of the USA.
That is a fairly small number. And if we extrapolate further, the number of gun owners who actually use a gun for criminal purposes.. I mean, it starts shrinking to negligble proportions.
Fuck, you got me on the same side as the NRA now. What a world we live in.
The NRA put out a statement saying that the right to bear arms is not up for debate for law-abiding citizens.
Which is more than I’m hearing from the Democratic Party so far on the trans thing!
Yeah, big chunks of the Democratic Party are deathly afraid of anything relating to transgender rights. Fucking cowards.
They’re waiting to speak out until someone tries quartering soldiers in a trans person’s home.
But that can be easily flipped around: I thought the Democrats were for gun control. And now they’re against it?
Crafter Man, don’t be such an oblivious idiot. They’re against discrimination. Get that through your thick skull into your little pea brain and shut the fuck up.
Raphael Lemkin, who coined the word genocide, was aware that you don’t want to define the term too narrowly because the idea is to prevent that type of atrocity. But he also took pains not to define the word too broadly: otherwise is stymies efforts to prevent actual genocides. Crying wolf is a thing.
Taking away the gun rights of transgender Americans is not genocide, remotely speaking. Everything isn’t Nazi Germany. Sometimes it is Fascist Italy. Other times it is Rwanda or Cambodia during the 1970s. In still other cases it is Thatcherism or Reaganism or Orbanism or Ortegaism or bog-standard military conquest or violations of international law.
How certain are you that there aren’t people high up in Trump’s administration who wouldn’t be okay with killing all trans Americans? If it’s less than 99.9%, then I think it’s pretty reasonable to be concerned.
I’m sure there are plenty of high up officials who would be happy killing everybody who listens to loud music on the bus, that doesn’t mean that a loud music listener pogrom is on its way.
My heart goes out to all the transgender gun nuts who might not be able to pew pew as much as they want, but in issues affecting real Americans…
My son will no longer be able to receive treatment in the state we live in. Our next closest state is going the same direction.
Note that neither of these announcements are in response to a new law. Gender affirming care for minors in Ohio is banned, but my son was grandfathered in. Legally he could continue to receive care, but the hospital, backed by a major corporation, has clearly caved to political pressure. The fascist Republican party is operating extra-legally, leaning on corporations and universities with backroom threats to bring them in line. The corporations and universities are operating out of fear.
I’m also operating out of fear. I fear I’ll be arrested for child abuse for providing medical care to my son. I fear that I’ll be arrested for crossing state lines to provide medical care for my son. I fear that my children will be taken from me, that my son will be sent to a detransitioning camp.
These are not the fears of an irrational, delusional man. All of these things are on the table, possibly in the next 6 months. Anyone who isn’t awake yet, wake up.
If there’s any Republicans left in this thread, I wish the absolute worst on you that board rules allow. You fucking suck.
How many actions have they taken against loud music listeners that are comparable to Nazi discriminatory actions preceding the Holocaust?
