Request for advice on Dance Reality Shows

I watched the finale of season 6 of Dancing With the Stars. So I have to ask - I never watched a dance show before this. I was only watching DWTS this time because Adam Carolla and Penn Gillette were on it. As soon as they were gone, so was I. But as a result, I started watching - and really enjoying - Bravo’s Step It Up and Dance. I don’t think I’ll be watching DWTS next season - unless another of my faves is on - as the cheese factor is a little too high for me. But many of you DWTS fans are also fans of So You Think You Can Dance. I know nothing about the show, but I’m curious. Those of you that watch all three shows - should I give SYTYCD a try?

Never seen the Bravo show, but SYTYCD is excellent fun – far less cheesy than DWTS (though not necessarily cheese-free). The audition shows (starting this week) can be a mixed bag, but watching the dancing is great. Plus there’s usually a thread happening here to discuss it as it unwinds.

I like that SYTYCD allows any level of dance training and experience into the audtions. So all the dancers that make the final twenty are well trained full fledged dancers, and there is not talk of ringers. The interesting part is that they have to dance in styles they are often unfamiliar with. So anyone who wants to audition (remembering these are already full time dancers) should really learn ballroom, jazz, contemporary, and hip hop and its variants. It is a fun show, has a lot less filler, and you will see much better dancing. Also the first shows of the auditions are pretty funny as a lot of people with more ego than talent audition.

Bolding mine.

Well, sort of. Last season one of the final 20 had no formal training. I think he made it as far as the last 6 couples or so before getting let go. As I recall, he got a free ride to the Debbie Allen dance studio to be formaly trained.

I’ve watched a couple seasons of SYTYCD, it’s pretty good. Once you get past the tiresome audition process, the dancers actually have some talent, and there are routines from the last couple years that I loved and still would love to see again. Watching them dance in styles that they aren’t trained in, but do well in, is great.

My parents love DWTS, so I watched it a few times. Holy crap, that show sucks. My impression is the actual dancer in the pair does the dancing, and the celebrity is there more or less as a prop- this is more true when the celeb is male and the pro dancer is female. Then the judges heap undeserved praise upon them. Totally cheeseball.

Never watched the one on Bravo!, but of those two SYTYCD is loads better.

I love SYTYCD and thought the Bravo show had too much drama with not enough dancing. I also am not enamored of DWTS, but adored America’s Best Dance Crew on MTV. So, for me I’ll watch the first and last, but not those in the middle. I highly recommend them and will be tuned in for as long as their on the air.

Well, hell. I completely forgot to check this. However, I did manage to see a clip of Robert the Popper’s audition, and I’m in! That was awesome!!!

The problem with SYTYCD is the same one that most of those shows have - too much filler, and it gets to be more of it as the show goes on because unlike any intelligent entertainment product it gets rid of entertainment as it goes on. Losing dancers each week is IMHO a bad idea after a certain point - who wants less substance and more fluff? I haven’t watched since the first season, though.
