Lauren, Sabra and Twitch are all SYTYCD. I started watching in the third season, I think, and I love it. I wish I could see the first few seasons. Why don’t they syndicate or DVD reality shows, apart from some “greatest hits” compilations? Or do they and I missed it?
I get kinda sad sometimes about that show, that it doesn’t get the kind of love it deserves, or the kids don’t. A great voice is trainable, but it’s either there or not, you can sit around all day watching TV and walk on stage and knock it out of the park.
But the dancers, man…they deserve so much respect. They are top-notch athletes who have, one way or another, spent long, hard, sweaty years of injuries and pain working to be as good as they are, and once they are on the show they are doing amazing work, learning incredibly complex and demanding routines, at least 3 every week.
And for what? A dancer’s life is brutal, just like an athletes: hard work, huge potential for injuries large and small, very short careers, and, unlike the big sports leagues, hardly anyone really makes much money at it. Maybe the choreographers. But unless you use it as a springboard to something more lucrative (Hello Paula & Jennifer), it’s very little monetary reward for a whole boatload of work.
American Idol and the like…well, some I’m sure love their music, but still so many see it as a fast track to fame and riches, and it certainly is. But even the winners on SYTYCD generally fade into obscurity after the win.
At least there’s a helluva lot more work for dancers these days than there was many years back. Being a dancer in the 70’s was a really hard road.
