Request for Thread Re-Open

DCnDC’s only crime was starting a Kids in the Hall quoting thread in the middle of the work day. It wasn’t even given a chance to blossom before being mercilessly cut down. I request the thread be re-opened.

GLeeMONEX for the mods?

Heh. To get Brain Candy on DVD, I had to buy it in a two-movie edition with some 80’s Beach movie with Frankie and Annette.

Personally, I don’t mind a “Kids in the Hall quoting thread” as long as it’s identified as such in the OP. I hate threads that are completely inexplicable to everyone else.

I also thought that was a pretty peremptory thread closing. It should have been given more of a chance.

It should have been given a title that told us what the subject was. I’ve never been a fan of “Try to figure out what us clever folk are talking about” threads.

And of course, all threads have to conform to what you personally like?

All I know is that these threads have been allowed to live before. In fact, it’s quite often. I really don’t care either way about whether the thread is opened back, but I would like the mods to make a decision on how they are going to deal with these.

I do want to point out that, if you are not familiar enough with the quotes to understand what is going on, you probably wouldn’t be contributing to the thread anyways. And I do sometimes enjoy trying to figure it out before I put the first unique looking quote into Google. Considering both of these things, I hope that, if it’s required to list the source, you’ll at least let it be done in bracketed* spoilers.

*Putting brackets around something prevents it from showing up in the hover text.

And of course, you have a valid reason for thinking my opinion on the matter is less valid than anyone elses?

I don’t know.

Could it be that since I wrote nothing of the sort, you just had some sort of reflexive response to my post without actually, y’know…reading it?

Bizarre, inexplicable, and truly pointless threads are closed regularly. This thread provides no clues to separate it from one of those. Ergo, twickster closed it.

Post #5 was an explanatory link.

I was under the impression that explanatory links beling in the OP so everyone else knows what the fuck the thread is about. I opened it and read it and thought, “What the fuck is this? Thanks for wasting my time.” I guess I’m just not one of the cool kids because I didn’t recognize is it as a KITH quote because I don’t have every damn sketch memorized.

I was disappointed that it got shut down so quickly but I understand why, and since there is now a working KITH thread started by someone else I got what I wanted.

I suppose I should not have been so esoteric about it. Sorry.

I think the reason twickster closed it was because DCnDC was making the majority of the posts with very little contribution from other Dopers. Other than that, I see very little difference between that thread and Deck the hars with bars of horry fa ra ra ra ra ra ra ra ra ra, which ran for three pages and even won a few new fans over to “A Christmas Story.”

Sorry, I’ve been offline most of the afternoon, I haven’t been ignoring you.

It was a combination of the fact that the OP [post] didn’t identify what the thread was about and that the OP [poster] was the only one participating.

Since a new thread has been started that avoids both of these problems, and since the OP [poster] seems okay with that as an alternative, I’ll leave the other thread locked.

Then don’t click on it. It’s almost too easy.

Also, a Google search is literally a click away in most browsers, if you are so bothered.

Personally, I wish every one of those “nothing but quotes” threads were closed. They are the epitome of too pointless for even a message board, IMO.

I’ve seen that argument. But I don’t agree with it. It seems as rude as for two people to talk to each other in a language in front of a third person who does not understand that language.

Except the “third person” is actually thousands of others in a crowded mess hall. And I see people speaking in their native languages all the time in public settings. I don’t see the big deal.

An open forum shouldn’t be compromised because of one’s ignorance.
