I picked this up today - I’ve repeatedly heard that RE4 was one of the best GC games of all time (a dubious honor, but anyway…), and it looked fantastic. When the Wii version got glowing advance reviews and I found out it was only $29.99, I had to check it out.
It’s pretty outstanding so far - nice and gory, and the graphics are ridiculously great, further convincing me that, at least with this generation of consoles, we’ve reached the point of diminishing returns with graphical advancements.
I love the way that the game controls - you use the nunchuck to move and you point and shoot with the remote, very similar to the slingshot/bow and arrow/clawshot parts of Twilight Princess. Unfortunately, you can’t move while aiming, so it gets a bit awkward when you’ve got a bunch of zombies coming after you and you can’t just strafe. There’s a nice slashing dagger attack (just shake the remote from side to side) for when they box you in, though.
I’m digging it so far - it seems significantly better in all respects than the last RE game I played (probably #2 back on the original Playstation).
I’m selling some of my played-out wii games and planning on picking this one up. I’ve never played a RE before, so I plan on being throughly entertained. I did play Eternal Darkness on GC, and I highly recommend it. If you’ve got a CG or Wii it’s worth the rental.
I had forgotten this was coming out. Thanks for the reminder! I think I’ll pick it up in case those thunderstorms hit tonight. I’ve never played a Resident Evil game before, but love zombie flicks.
I recently bought this on Amazon and I agree - good fun!
I disliked the RE games I played before. They were like plenty of other games I had played before on the PC, only with awful controls, a save system that that took the annoyance of the requirements of console systems to new heights, and writing that made a Romero fan-fic look good. And when RE 4 hit I heard a lot of good things from people including quit a bit of “If you didn’t like RE before then this is the one to play!” So I kept meaning to get the Gamecube version and when the Wii version was announced I decided to get that, but so far I haven’t seen it on shelves.
And “a dubious honor” being the best Gamecube game? Please. I’ve got close to 40 solid Gamecube games that would fight for that title. The GC’s library may have been smaller but the average quality was much higher.
Well, I got it and finished it and I’ve got to say it wasn’t bad. It’s not a title I would have picked up for myself at full price if I hadn’t been looking for decent Wii games but it’s not going into the storage closet of shame. The writing is still god awful and raises incoherence to new levels, but it plays and controls well which is more than I can say about the previous games. Using the Wiimote to aim worked great except for the zoomed in rifle where for no good reason it switches to using the analog stick to aim; you go from great precise control to sloppy fiddling. I spent the bulk of the last half of the game concerned that I wouldn’t have enough ammo to make it through which to me says that they balanced it just right.
The biggest problem I had is that there might have been a little too much Dragon Lair style play where you watch the cut scene and do the move at the right moment. I’ve seen that a lot lately and it’s just as dull in 2007 as it was in 1984.
Sadly, it’s dull now because every game since RE4 has used it ad nauseum. RE4 brought it back, and quite well, imo. It has since been abused by other games, and usually much less successfully.
