You know why I don't like any of the Resident Evil games?

Because they create “tension” by making you f**k with mediocre to terrible controls while a zombie or villager is chasing you down.

I’ve loathed the RE games of the past strictly because the control scheme was so god aweful. Now I got RE4 on PS2 because it looks fun and has a “great new control scheme”. Well, this control scheme eats nuts too. Why couldn’t they do with a regular old dual analog control setup? Seriously. I can’t figure out why. Ghost Recon 2 has the third person close up battle view down pat. This game would be so much fun if I could just focus on enjoying the story, environments and whatnot and not have to learn some stiff control scheme.

I can’t move while I have my knife or gun drawn? STILL!!! WTF?? Why didn’t they fix this?!?

So I take out my knife to kill some villager that has beared down on me and I can’t reach him because I guess I’m like 6in too far away. So I have to put the F’n knife away and take out my gun to move forward and by that time I’m already getting gouged with a pitchfork.

FTR, this game (RE4) seems like it could be (and may still be if I can get used to these arcaic controls) a great game. The villagers are mobbing my ass and a chainsaw guy chopped my head off. Pretty creepy feeling.

Please, for the love of god though, Capcom use a standard control scheme in the next one. I’m begging.

Ok. I’ve calmed down now. Let me explain.

I never liked the RE games because of the controls. The story and atmosphere has always been fun though. But the controls turned me off.

So I hear RE4 has this new control setup that is supposed to be so sweet. I get this thing today (for $35 on PS2) and the controls are different, but still stiff as hell IMHO.

I have to admit that my anger was fueled by the village I walked into in the first 10 minutes of playing. I had to figure out the controls REAL QUICK because these villagers were EVERYWHERE.

I have to say I’ve never played a game that kicks you in the nuts so soon after you start playing as this one did. I died 11-12 times and FINALLY fended off the viliagers in the upstairs of that house. I didn’t know that the church bell would ring and they would all leave after a while so I was going nutso in that place

That was INTENSE. More so than any other RE or Silent Hill I’ve played.

Now that I’m calm I still think these controls are overly complicated and very unintuitive, but I think I’lll get used to them (hopefully).

I like to play these games but they seriously keep me on edge everytime something jumps out I jump out of my skin.
The silent hill games are really scary its like resident evil in a whole city instead of just one building.

I agree about the controls
The scenario is like zombie jumps out, hmm let me rotate 360 degrees, whoops I backed up too far, oh no the monster is attacking me let me take ten minutes to get health then I’ll slowly pull out my gun, then horrible aiming for 10 seconds either hitting the floor or the ceiling eventually the monster gets bored and just goes away. its like playing a character that is a brain-damaged junkie stuck in a vat of jello.

I’ve played through RE4 at least 10 times, but it was on the Game Cube. Controls shouldn’t be too radically different, though.

So you can’t run with your knife? Well didn’t mom ever tell you not to run with knives?

Know what you’re supposed to do with the knife?

You’re supposed to stun your enemies first, by shooting them in the knee. When they stagger you run up close to them, whip out your knife and then start slicing away. If you don’t stun them first, then sure they’ll attack you.

Check your controls. There should be a quick one-button method for taking out your knife.

Don’t get discouraged about the first part in the village. It’s kind of a wake up call, to get your attention. The whole game isn’t always quite so intense, but now you know how intense the game can get.

I only played part of 2 but the controls annoyed me as well.

That and the fact the police station drove me batty. Who in the hell designs a building like this? I pity the cops. It’s bad enough they have to worry about criminals trying to kill them and people suing them, but they also have to deal with a police station designed by retarded monkeys. Want to go the toliet? Sorry, you need to move this big statue around.

I can’t speak for the PS2 controls, but on the Gamecube they were brilliant. It took a bit of getting used to. I think the first few fights I spent the first three shots aiming at shoes. After a while they became very intuitive.

Now that I think on it, one review I read said the controls weren’t as good on ps2 as they were on gamecube. More buttons caused more confusion. It took a bit longer to get the feel of them.

At any rate, enjoy the game. RE4 for gamecube is one of my all time favorite games. I played it 5 times through before I played another game. Then there are the mini missions.

If you still don’t like it, send me an e-mail. I’ll trade you a game for it. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ve hated the RE series for some time now. I’ve never seen a game uses the limitations of its control system to create ‘challanges’ for you to get out of. Also, they are very fond of cinematics that drop you into the worst possible situation that any fool would have taken steps to avoid (Oooh look! An cargo elevator is down below in darkness. I’ll just walk along this narrow platform to push the button to make it come up and wait in this exposed position. Hey! Zombies! Whodda thunk. Once “Nemesis” become the order of the day I pretty much gave up buying RE games and just rented them.

Silent Hill had poor controls too, but they never tried to take as much advantage of it.

I’ll add this. I hated every RE game that I played until 4. Even if you hated the games, you should at least rent RE4. They stepped up their game on this one.

UPDATE: I’m starting to get a hang of the controls on RE4 now and it’s getting much better. I still think the shooting mechanic needs serious work, but I’m starting to get used to it now.

I think this game is surely the best of the RE games so far. I like the story (I just got past the croc) and the voice acting is WAY better than previous games. Leon actually sounds like a regular person and emotes when he should. When he says “shit” it doesn’t sound forced, it sounds natural.

I do like how they seem to have greatly increased the availible ammo in this game compared to the last ones, but I hate the fact that they got rid of the storage chest. Not sure why they did that but I bought the bigger suitcase so I’m not doing too bad.

What croc would that be? I don’t recall a croc. Is the PS2 version adding beasties?

Probably the lake beastie whose name I forget. They did add more bonus missions and weapons to the ps2 game.

Good to see you’re enjoying the game a bit more Stinkpalm. If you like the dialogue now, just wait until the castle.
