I’ve recently needed to restore to a previous stable point a few days ago, but kept getting an unsuccessful restoration due to “appxstaging”.
Is this a virus, or a malfunctioning app?

It would help to give some context about what you’re doing. Is it on a Windows machine, a Mac, a phone or what? What does “restore to a previous staging point” mean?
However, a little Googling makes me suspect you’re on a Windows machine doing a restore to a system recovery point. If this is not correct please clarify. This suggests the first thing to check is to make sure you’re in an Administrator account when you do the restore. It also has some other things to check if that’s not the issue.
