Rewatching seasons/film in preparation for new season/film

Do you do this? There have been a fair number of new seasons/instalments of movie series coming out recently, and more are coming. In the age of streaming it is easy to rewatch earlier seasons or movies.

I find I’m rewatching more often, particularly when I can’t recall the plot or who all the characters were, as otherwise I can’t follow the new instalment. I’m not sure how to feel about this, it seems like a waste of time, on the other hand it is not a slog as I liked it before. If I hate doing a rewatch, I should probably not watch at all, right?

Sometimes. For instance, Old Guard 2 just came out. I remember so little about Old Guard 1 that I had thought it was a series. So if I end up watching 2, I’ll rewatch 1 first.

Pretty much never. I rely on the in-program catchup, (if there is one) and context to try to jog my shaky memory. Nowadays Chat GTP is very good at “who’s that guy and what’s his deal?” questions.

My rule of thumb is, if I remember the earlier movie or series so poorly that I feel like I need to refresh my memory before the new one, that’s an argument that the material didn’t stick with me and wasn’t worth my time in the first place so there’s no point in continuing with the new stuff.

I’m rewatching Andor (TV Series 2022–2025) - IMDb so I can follow on with a repeat of Rogue One (2016) - IMDb.

I think Rogue One is one of the best films in Star Wars … and Andor is an excellent companion piece. :sunglasses:

I do it all the time.
For example, I just finished seasons 1 to 3 of Resident Alien yesterday, even though the fourth season is about halfway through. (so don’t spoil anything - I’m avoiding the thread about it).
I frequently rewatch shows anyway. Rewatching just before the new season comes out seems like the best time to me.
Which reminds me… I need to see if I can get more information on when the new season of Only Murders in the Building is coming out.

While I am largely in agreement with Cervaise I find that my faulty memory often needs a nudge. Rather than re-watching a whole series I resort to sites like this:

I’ll usually rewatch at least some of the previous season if it’s been over a year between seasons. Sometimes I’ll watch the whole previous season and sometimes I’ll just watch the last few episodes.

For the recently released season 3 of Squid Game, I didn’t rewatch any of season 2 because the gap between seasons was only 6 months; the recap sufficed.

Eh, it more depends on the length of time between seasons. When Severence season two started this year, I rewatched all of season 1 before started and it was a very smart decision. Sure the recap reminded me of the broad story points, but with a show like that there are so many small details that you are just not going to remember three years later. It has nothing to do with the quality of the show, just that it’s been three years since watching it.

There was a time when I always did this. I would also do it with Comic Books when the next volume came out also but as free time decreases and content (I hate that word as much as you do but here we are) increases I don’t really do it anymore beyond maybe rewatching a finale before the start of a new season.

Apparently not I. I watched the three Star Gate TV series in reverse order.

Season 5 just wrapped filming a couple of weeks ago, which is just a little later than when season 4 wrapped last year (mid-June) and season 4 premiered at the end of August, so if they are on the same schedule, maybe around early September?

I don’t rewatch even though I have often forgotten much of the previous season or film. It makes watching feel like homework. I also agree with @Cervaise’s approach. I waded into Old Guard 2 remembering nothing of the original. It was as forgettable as the first film and ended with a cliffhanger for number 3 which I won’t be watching…unless I have forgotten not to watch it.

I’ve currently been doing a rewatch of those. Finished SG-1, then rewatched the original movie, now I’m mostly through Universe. Unsure if I’ll bother with the far inferior Atlantis.

Thanks!
To show how weird I am…
It looks like there are 10 episodes per season. I’ll estimate the last episode is around November 29th. I’ll watch 3 or 4 epiodes per weekend to make it 3 week per season.
15 weeks from November 29th is August 16th. So, that would be when I start season 1. And I will adapt if I hear otherwise.

IIRC, David Suchet explained that he’d rewatch his earlier performances as Poirot when preparing to film the latest episode of, well, POIROT. And he’d helpfully add that, uh, you’re maybe not getting it: if they’re gearing up to do Episode 43, then he’ll gladly binge-watch 42 episodes.

Sir! Brickbats at fifty yards! Universe is the worst of them! Atlantis is second to SG 1.
