Rian Johnson to develop new Star Wars trilogy from scratch

“Star Wars will get another film trilogy, which will be entirely new and will be separate from the current saga focusing on the Skywalker family and its close associates and friends. The news comes direct from Star Wars’ official blog, and we also now know that the new saga will be led by Rian Johnson, the director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”

The Last Jedi must be pretty darn impressive if Disney’s just basically tossing him the keys to the franchise.

I wish I was on this gravy train.

The facts about the content of this trilogy are scarce, it just says it’s an unexplored aspect of the Star Wars universe, though I don’t know how that could be as it’s been quite thoroughly mined in additional media.

But as it’s an entire trilogy, does this mean it will replace the current trilogy after it concludes, taking up its slot while further one-offs are released, and then the Rey Finn Poe story resumes sometime in 2026 or whenever? Or will they continue that story straight away and have this replace the one-offs, which they are having such a struggle finding directors for? Or will they be like Marvel and release multiple Star Wars movies per year (which might be over-saturation but seems to be working out okay for the aforementioned Marvel)?

In the grand tradition of the Ewok movies (which nobody but me seems to remember), they’re going to make a trilogy of Gungan movies.

I wonder if it just means they’re giving him a three-picture story, or if they’ll actually make it the next trilogy named Episodes X-XII. I’d prefer to avoid the latter (especially if it’s non-Skywalker related).

I thought all the extended universe was eliminated now. He could set his trilogy a thousand years after or before our current movies for all we know.

I think Episode VIII must be pretty good. I think Johnson turned down Episode IX; this opportunity is too great to walk away from, though.

They’ve even done that. See KOTOR, aka Knights Of The Old Republic.

The canon of the old EU has been reset, but a lot of it has also been repurposed. Games and books and comics are ongoing, telling these same stories in a more controlled, carefully overseen canon. That means things like ancient Jedi, bounty hunters, smugglers, the Hutts, politics, different versions of an Empire, the Sith, have all still been utilised in the new stories. So an unexplored Star Wars idea is difficult to imagine.

The first one, I hear, is titled: Jar-Jar’s Back!!! meesa’s mad as hell and not gonna take it anymore!

I wouldn’t mind seeing a Mandalorian Trilogy set in the same period as episodes 4-6. Cover Bo-Katan and Sabine Wren fighting the Empire post Star Wars Rebels.

Bo-Katan is in her 50’s, so middle aged female action lead type.
Sabine in her 20’s at the start, we don’t need her to be whitewashed here. Celina Jade or Nichole Bloom?
Her brother Tristan, perfect role for a early to mid 20’s rising star.

All new Imperial admirals/agents/leaders. Hell, live action Thrawn?

And lots and lots of new toys.

Chloe Bennet!

I’m not a big fan of prequels. Let’s finish the Skywalker series and move on to something else. Maybe something set 1000 years later?

How can she be whitewashed when she is already white?

Space diabeetus!

Jar-Jar has a new canon fate.

Personally, I want a Young Yoda Chronicles trilogy. His sidekick would be an ET. Together they battle a coalition of Sith Amanamen and Ephant Mons.I’d watch the hell out of that.

I love Jar Jar! I dont understand why more people dont???:dubious::dubious:
