Here’s a short clip of the relevant scene - YouTube
I think Jerry is actually pronouncing Akira correctly by Japanese standards, where ‘r’ can sometimes sound more like ‘l’ or ‘d’.
Jerry knows nothing about Japanese standards :). More to the point he says “an akita”, to which Rick corrects him on both the who and what with “he turned himself into akira.” Jerry said “akita” folks and it was hilarious*. Those who disagree need to make an appointment with an audiologist**.
*Much like this entire absurd argument :p.
** Now watch the writers confirm he actually said “akira” and I’ll have to go make an appointment with my audiologist.
On a note that has nothing to do with closed captions, I was amused by the fact that the first thing Rick did upon making it back to his universe was check in on his favorite Boglin, as the only time I’ve ever seen those things referenced in pop culture is in Jim Sterling’s YouTube videos. Perhaps one of the writers is a fan of his.
Yeah, I didn’t want to get into that whole cc hijack, but Jerry clearly says Akita. Jerry’s an idiot.
It just goes to show that yet again, R&M fans just miss the joke completely, like with the Macdonalds sauce thing (It wasn’t a recommendation, it was about Rick not caring about anyone).
I mean, not in the clip that was linked in this thread :
Rick does not correct Jerry there - though Rick does use the more usual Americanized pronunciation, he doesn’t emphasize it as he would if he were correcting Jerry’s ignorance. Haven’t watched the full ep yet, but if that is the occurrence of ‘Akita’ people are going on about… it’s ‘Akira’, pronounced Japanese style. I think Jerry’s just a weeb.
That’s certainly one of the oft-repeated themes of RAM.
Not quite as enamoured on this episode. Rick’s toilet antics just don’t chime well with me. App idea started strong but faced away… Would be ok if there wasn’t only 5 episodes in the season, where it could stand a couple of duds.
Agreed on both A and B plots. Both started out with possibilities, but did not end well. The plot with ppl hooking up with folks and dumping them immediately didn’t ring true - they seemed to be dumping each other before they even had a chance to introduce themselves. Beth & Summer’s arguments were a miss . .where the hell did Beth come up with a hang-glider? I missed where that came from, and she’s not the one to pull stuff like that out of nowhere.
The alien ship antics were the most uninteresting alien ship antics to date. I did get a big laugh out of Rick’s over-the-top bathroom routine, finding the most beautiful, serene location you could ever imagine just to drop a toilet there. That was the end of the laughs I got out of that plot. Never really felt the toilet-squatting (heh) alien plot took off. Didn’t get his personality or motivations.
Best line of the episode for me:
Farmer: “What the hell are you doing?”
Beth: “Parenting!”
Farmer: “That’s not how I did it! But then, look how that worked out for my daughter. She joined ISIS.”
Wow, this thread is surprisingly unpopular with comments, if you remove the argument about about subtitling… I would have expected more than three comments on the second episode…
I enjoyed Rick’s tracking down of his foe, regardless of how it affected the criminals, robot soldiers and others he encountered.
Maybe we’re more about nitpicking and arguing. It’s also possible a lot of folks haven’t seen the latest episode, what with time-shifting. Finally, I think mediocre episodes of any series generates little discussion. I found this one lackluster. I even visited the R&M subReddit, and while there’s a ton of overenthusiastic fans looking for a new catchphrase to shout, there were a surprising number of posts less than thrilled about this one.
It’s not often R&M whiff on both A & B plots.
One of the reasons I avoid reddit in general and R&M one specifically. All this “pickle rick” crap. It was a substandard episode made a bit better by the psychiatrist and the fight with the bodyguards, the actual pickle stupidity, well, brought it down.
And what do such fans do now? They shout and seek out more “pickle rick”.
Glutie-ootie-oooooot!
I disagree, Pickle Rick was a great episode and Susan Sarandon as Dr. Wong was amazing. Reddit makes everything stupid.
So when Rick first had Tony in the conference room, and Tony said he was ready to die, Rick got frustrated, opened a portal, and brought back what appeared to be another Tony who admitted he liked pooping on Rick’s toilet. Who was that? Tony from the past, or from another dimension?
The app plotline was a good idea and I thought it worked well. Reminded me of an old science fiction story, “Love at the 99th Percentile.”
Not as impressed by Rick’s toilet story. It was more going through the motions than breaking new ground.
Alternate universe, I think - a version of Tony whose wife was still alive, but who had nevertheless used Rick’s toilet.
