Rihanna taking back Chris Brown.

Isn’t this a lovely turn of events? Why should a savage beating and being left for dead on the side of the road get in the way of “true love”. It’s such an empowering message to send to all her young fans that it’s perfectly acceptable for a guy to beat the holy hell out of you so long as he apologizes (and has P. Diddy behind him facilitating the make-up).

All those nice guys out there who’d never dream of raising your hand to a woman, you better change your ways. You too could get a gorgeous megastar platinum album selling artist like Rihanna (and keep her!) if only you show her who’s boss (and it doesn’t hurt to be rich famous and good looking yourself).

And let’s not forget Rihanna’s dad, who is cool with the make up and will support his daughter no matter what. Isn’t that sweet? Oh no sir, it’s not your duty as her parent at all, to force her to realize that taking back a scum back like that is unacceptable. Go ahead and let them both stand under your Um-Buh-Relluh… Ellah…
Ellah…

big sighs all around…

You’re not surprised, are you? This is what abused women usually do. When he’s not beating the crap out of her, I am sure Chris Brown is a very nice guy.

I do agree that is sends a bad message to all the young girls who look up to her.

True… I’m not suprised so much as dissapointed. It could have been an opportunity to show young people (let’s face it, is anyone over 20 buying Rihanna/C.B. albums?) that this type of thing isn’t tolerated. The media could have completely crushed his career, but now who knows what will happen. I’ll be very curious to see how the media treats this one.

I thought the one thing that may have been different is that this was so public. Usually abused women try to hide it, and we’d have only found out in a “behind the music” special 10 years from now. With this being such public knowledge I was hopeful for a different outcome.

I love the quote from ABC News:

More fodder for geniuses like this

With fans like that – not to mention TI and Terrence Howard (retractions of support for Brown be damned) – I’m not sure how much he will actually suffer, especially if he decides to do rehab or find Jesus.

I haven’t been following that closely, but is anyone really under the impression that this is the first time he has hit her? IME, abusers do not keep their hands off a SO for their relationship only to one day decide to choke them unconscious. I’d say returning to him is – sadly, tragically – par for the course.

(Slightly OT – anyone catch the recent Law & Order: SVU about an abusive relationship? Not sure if it was new or a rerun, but it sure was brutal.)

Please don’t think I’m in any way advocating violence, but I got the impression this was more a situation where two hotheaded, probably emotionally immature individuals took an argument too far and that she actually started it. Again, by that I don’t mean “she was asking for it”, but that I have a feeling this isn’t the first time one of their fights ended up getting physical. Also, the one photo I saw didn’t look like she’d had “the shit beat out of her” and I didn’t hear that she’d been “left for dead by the side of the road” *

I’ve never subscribed to the notion that celebrities have an *obligation *to be role models. I mean, based on what we know(and it aint much) I think everyone in this situation, including her father, sounds like a dipshit, but that’s their right.
*No, I don’t think it makes it any less offensive to what degree she was harmed or if she was left on the street. I’m just saying the situation is bad enough without sensationalizing it. My apologies if you have a cite describing the incident as the OP did.

Was he convicted or even charged for this crime?

The only thing I may have sensationized is the phrase “for dead” but she was most definitely “left”.

It sounds like she refused to press charges.

Don’t know a single thing about them or their music but it is a sad turn of events. :frowning:

And by some odd circumstance, her record sales took off after the “incident”. Hmm.

What are you implying? That she allowed him to beat her up for fame and fortune? Or maybe she fell on his fists? She was the hottest female artist in music when that happened, no need for sitcom schemes to make her richer.

I guess we have different notions of what a beatdown looks like, because the photo looks awful to me. Contusions on both sides of her head, the beginnings of a black eye, cuts and bruises all over her cheeks, chin and lips. In addition there were bite markson her arm and several fingers. Clearly this wasn’t one slap or punch thrown in the heat of the moment. He worked her over.

Supposedly they were having a fight and Rihanna threw his keys out of the car onto the side of the road. Was it emotionally immature? Yes. Deserving of a beatdown? Absolutely not. And he did flee the scene before the cops showed up.

Meh, it’s part of the job. Especially when your target market is college age and under. Anyone who isn’t aware of that when they sign up for it needs to start living on planet Earth.

He’s probably putting all his energy into kissing up to her in order to avoid the jail time. His only defense is to convince her not to press charges.

It won’t take long for him to dump her once the heat is off. I hope and pray he does, because she clearly is too depressed/insecure/emotionally damaged to protect herself. I can’t stand to think about what the next one will look like - or whether she’ll survive it.

My heart aches for her, and I hope (but doubt) she’ll get the help she needs.

I totally agree with the post that Chris Brown’s career should go to #&!! because of this. Unfortunately, I doubt his target market will see it that way.

Yeah, I bet her record sales are exactly what she was thinking about when she was being punched and kicked and beaten.

In fact, I bet what really happened as they were driving to the Grammys is that she turned to Chris Brown and said “Babe, even though my career is red-hot and I’ve done guest vocals with some of the hottest acts in showbiz, I think it’s time I take it to the next level and plaster my name all over the tabloids. Think you could be a doll and punch me a few times? I’ve got witnesses waiting around the corner so they can call 911 on us, but don’t worry, I promise not to press charges.”

Yeah, that MUST be it.

It’s heartbreaking, but unfortunately it isn’t the first time a woman decides to believe her abuser when he says he’s going to change, and it probably won’t be the last time either. :frowning: I just hope they’re willing to commit to some extensive counselling for BOTH of them, because that’s the only way this doesn’t end very very badly.

This is the part that makes me wonder how one sided this fight really was, and who started the physical part. Bites on fingers and arms are usually inflicted when one person has their arms around the face of the other. I have no idea what happened, but neither do any of us here. I do have friends that have been attacked by girlfriends and it is a tough position to be in. Fight back and chances are you are the one who gets arrested, take it passively and you get laughed at.

Either way, they are morons for getting back together.

That about sums it up right there. A bunch of unedjamacated morons who live their lives like a bad episode of Jerry Springer. Just because they sing and have money doesn’t mean they aren’t trash. Bunch of classless hillbillys.

Or perhaps when the person is shielding his or her face from being punched? I’m just speculating. All I know is, I have not seen any photos or heard of any evidence that Chris Brown was injured during this incident.

So, she holds up her arms to shield her face and he starts snapping at her like a dog? If she was defending her face, you would expect bruising on the arms, not bites. Even if he was trying to bite her face, you would expect to see bites on the outside of the arm, not the inside.

I don’t know how accurate these reports are, or what really happened. It just struck me as odd that she had bite wounds inside her arm. I saw a picture of a smaller person jumping on the back of a larger person and attacking their face.

Right after the incident, one thing in the media was “nobody will hire him for endorsements now”. Good.

But what about her endorsements? I saw her CoverGirl commercial twice in a half hour last night. I won’t buy a CoverGirl product while they have her as a spokesperson, because of this.

People who seek fame can’t possibly believe that they will not be considered role models by their young fans. How many little girls have you seen looking like tarts since Madonna hit the scene in the early 80s? Fame=followers. I’m not saying it’s right, but it’s fact.

Young women, and young men, have too few positive role models. She, by taking him back into her life, is telling young girls and women who “look up to her” that it’s OK if he hits you. As long as he loves you… She had a perfect opportunity to stand up for women everywhere, if only she’s said “This is not acceptable, and you are no longer part of my life”. Alone is better than abused.
