RIP Bob Saget

There was a case of the girl who died from a brain bleed two days after having been hit by a hockey puck.. (Holy cow! 20 years ago!)

when i heard this news i thought about natasha richardson and brittanie cecil, brittanie was in hospital and under observation. you never know.

head injuries are tricksy.

That was the first thing that jumped into my mind too.

Humans are funny; we are generally incredibly durable, but we’re also mind-bogglingly complex. Most injuries will not kill you but just the tiniest difference this one time and you die.

Another casualty of a slip-and-fall-induced concussion was Dr. Robert Atkins, of Atkins Diet fame.

I wiped out in an ice skating rink once, and bounced the back of my head pretty hard off the ice. Blacked out for a bit, and when I woke up, everything was spinning and I couldn’t stand. Had to crawl off the ice and ended up lying on my back next to the rink for ten or fifteen minutes until I could remember how my legs were supposed to work.

Most striking thing was, the rink was pretty crowded, and literally nobody noticed or tried to help in any way. At the very least, you’d think having a ten year old splayed out on the ice for several minutes would get someone to come out and yell at me for blocking the other skaters.

Going back about 7 or 8 years ago now there was a very bad ice storm. I was walking very carefully but suddenly my legs flew out from under me. I don’t know how I did it be instinctively I tucked my chin to my chest and held it so tight my neck muscles were sore for a few days. Got a hell of a bruise on my back. During the same storm a friend of mine bounced his head on the pavement doing the same thing. He was out of work for months with a concussion.

Anyone see any banana peels near the comedy club?

There’s a dozen ways you could fall and bump your :face_with_head_bandage:. Most of the time a couple aspirins takes care of it. It’s just bad luck that Bob fell squarely on the back of his head.

If Saget had gone to the hospital, could there have been anything they could have done for him?

We’ll never know.

asprin is not a good thing to take after hitting your head. use a different pain reliver.

one doctor said it was possible that the skull fractures could be explained by initial impact, then ricochet impact.

I work with a woman whose husband, some years ago, went outside one icy morning to get the newspaper (which should give you some idea of how long ago this was). He slipped on the ice, hit his head, and was killed almost instantly.

Can you imagine that? “I’ll be right back, I’m just going out to get the paper.” And you never see your husband alive again? How horrible would that be?

I guess it would depend on how recently the bird’s cage had been cleaned.

On MLK Day 2016, my brother’s father-in-law slipped and fell on ice from a standing position. From then on, he’s been a quadriplegic.

My friend slipped on ice, fell backwards and hit her head. She was shaken but thought nothing of it, drove home. Later that night she picked up a book and noticed the words were all jumbled, she couldn’t make sense of it. Her husband took her to the hospital where she stayed for three days while they waited to see if she needed head surgery. She did recover, it was touch and go for a while, but I sometimes wonder if there was some residual damage…I live alone and falling and getting injured is one of my big worries now. I could be alone and dying for days!

“Multiple” fractures to the front and the back of his skull.

Just being reported.

:frowning:

You know, that stupid teacups ride at Disney World is just a few miles away.

Years ago,I was riding my bike without a helmet (I know!) when my front wheel got caught in a divot in the road. I fell, and as I was falling I kept trying to keep my head from hitting the ground. I didn’t succeed, but it didn’t hit very hard. It didn’t even hurt. But the next day my neck was killing me. Took me a minute to figure it out.

Something similar happened to a friend’s father. The family was staying in a motel in the mountains, he went to get something from the car, slipped on the ice, hit his head and never regained consciousness. They found him 10 minutes later when they went to check on him after he hadn’t returned. About a week later the family opted to take him off of life support. Horrible way to end a family vacation.

From People:

Orbital fractures are fairly common if the back of the head is hit hard enough.
