RIP Carl Weathers

Carl Weathers, who played Apollo Creed in the Rocky films, Greef Karga on The Mandalorian, and Chubbs in Happy Gilmore, passed away today.

Ugh, so sad. RIP.

Of the stuff I’ve seen him in, my favorite moment with him was in Episode 7 of the first season of The Mandalorian. His Greef Karga character had intended to betray Mando, Grogu, and Cara Dune to the Imperials, but when Grogu saved his life, he realized he couldn’t go through with it, and killed the two henchmen left over that he’d brought with him to betray them. And became a good guy.

I’ll think of him every time I get stew going.

Loved his appearances on Arrested Development!!

Now only one man alive knows how this fight ended.

Damn, another of the greats is gone. One hell of a backup guy to Rocky and Arnold. An impressive guy in his own right. R.I.P.

Same.

Wow, it seems like just yesterday he was hiking with Kevin Nealon on his youtube channel. He seemed to be in good shape. But the episode was probably filmed more than a year ago, so who knows what happened between then and now.

I think I’ll make Stew tonight in his honor…

They revealed the winner of that fight in Creed.

Was going to mention that. He played a great Carl Weathers.

Dammit!

I still hoped that he’d one day become a governor like Arnold and Jesse. Then you’d truly have the Predator Governor Coalition.

RIP Carl. Say hello to Lincoln and the gator while you’re up there.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that.

I didn’t see Creed. Who won that fight?

Apollo did

I didn’t know that.

But I wondered whether Rocky’s last words to Apollo at his gravesite (“You were the best”) in Rocky IV were a dog whistle.

I also didn’t know Weathers was an NFL linebacker.

RIP, champ.

He recently appeared in a FanDuel commercial with Rob Gronkowski - I thought he’d be making more appearances right about time for the Super Bowl. He’ll be remembered as Apollo Creed for sure.

edit: Rob.

You’re right, he did. Now it’s going to be weird seeing that knowing he just passed.

You and I both. It would have been just perfect.

As mentioned, saw him in the ad with Gronk just last Sunday.

Sad to see him go. Impressive set of credits, for sure.

The decision to make Apollo Creed an interesting and sympathetic character (rather than a simple bad guy) was a piece of real brilliance. And Carl Weathers was outstanding in the part. I don’t think the movie would have worked otherwise.

Requiescat in pace.
