RIP Robert Duvall

One of the greats. RIP, Great Santini.

“The older the violin, the sweeter the music.”
–Augustus McCrae

Someday this life’s gonna end.
He reflects on this for a moment and frowns. Then he gets up and walks away.

That was his seminal role for me. I don’t think anyone else could have carried that off half as well.

I kind of love him tearing into Stanley Kubrick. He called Kubrick an enemy of actors because of his ridiculous amount of takes, which sometimes reach a point there is no way Kubrick could benefit much from them.

When I first heard that, I thought he must have been related to Shelley Duvall, but they were not related.

Unbelievable career. And a nice long life he had. Hollywood would not have been the same without him, and will not be the same without him. Rest in peace.

He was a great actor. I knew him best from Apocalypse Now and the Godfather series and he crushed both parts Sad to see another legend pass.

Amen to both of these. “He put in a lot of change.”

But for me, Tender Mercies was his masterpiece.

This is the kind of thing that happens when you buy a used lion.

RIP. I’ll put in a good word for his late-career performance as a mysterious grizzled hermit in Get Low.

I can’t think of a movie of his I didn’t either like or love. Open Range is one of my “comfort” movies to put in when I am sick and need, well, comfort. RIP Boss Spearman. One can only aspire to leave a legacy a fraction of what you left behind. :sob:

Don’t think he ever had a real dud (at least in his acting, some of the movies overall, maybe), but the scene that sticks to me to this day is this speech from the movie “Secondhand Lions”. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/V-5dpW--6Bw

Rubbin’ is racing.

Oh yeah I forgot he was in that one.

Sad news indeed, almost a year to the day after his close friend Gene Hackman, two actors who were among the very best of their generation but never seemed to get that superstar top billing. Also two men that both served in the Army and throughout their long careers in the spotlight never had major public disgraces. Just pure quality and great love of their craft. Can’t remember a role I didn’t thoroughly enjoy Duvall in; as much of a prick as Frank Burns was in MASH, that just showed off Duvall’s acting chops. Truly one of the greats.
