the whole point of the thread was to discuss suicide, but that seem to have gotten lost in the flood of ‘go see the doctor you nut’ posts. maybe what Mad Dog was looking for was a legitimate down-to-earth non-PC discussion of suicide. i don’t see the controversy. something tells me one or even three posts that simply say “Suicide is always a viable option” is NOT going to be what sends Mad Dog over the edge…
And just how many suicidal people have you dealt with to have this reliable gut feeling ? Ever hidden all the knives and sharp objects in the house ? Ever felt that tap-dancing on eggshells wasn’t good enough, so you learned to do it in heels ? People with suicidal ideation can be EXTREMELY SENSITIVE to minor perturbations. I’d rather smoke cigarettes while waist deep in a pool of gasoline than have to cope with another terminally depressed family member.

So what is the protocol for someone posting about thoughts of suicide in the Pit? If this person is serious about committing suicide, is the Pit the place to post? The board? Why isn’t this person seeking professional help? Are the Mods or Admins trying to track where this person is at and alerting the authorities? Or is this whole excercise just limited to outrage about someone saying “Suicide is always a viable option”?
When I read the thread, I don’t remember seeing phone numbers, links, titles of books or the like that would help this person out. I haven’t read the thread in a day, so these things may have happened.
i wonder how many people kill themselves because they can’t ever have a rational discussion about suicide, except with a paid professional. literally anything you or i say could further motivate a suicidal person to end it, so what is the point of not talking about it openly?
I don’t see a controversy either. Without question, the post that stated - suicide is always a viable option, was rude and insensitive. We can’t know exactly what to write or not write in a situation like this. It only makes sense, at least to me, that a response should be sensitive, thoughtful, and sincere.
I don’t care what the fuck they want or what is “protocol” for the pit. We’re talking about SOMEONE’S LIFE here. As someone who has both been suicidal a number of times AND someone who has been pushed mighty close to the edge ON THIS VERY BOARD let me tell you that this shit isn’t to be taken lightly.

#1 I never said that AcidKid wasnt being a jerk. My only bone of contention is that just like the rest of us , he is entitled to his opinion. If you feel that bullying someone just because you disagree with their opinion is a viable option then maybe you(the collective you) are the jerk.
#2 Why should I care about some total strangers life?? It isnt my concern if they want to kill themself. I didnt make them depressed and the only real advice I could offer is to cut down and not accross. I have to wonder how you survive day to day if you seriously get sucidal over things you read on a fucking internet message board. God forbid something seriously bad were to happen. It could be the end for someone.

You can wonder all you want. I will begin to care about total strangers living and dieing as soon as someone can give me real reason to. The “They are people” or the “We are all conected” arguments dont make any sense to me. Millions of people die every day. All you have to do is look in the obituarys of your local paper to see some of them. If you dont weep for them , then dont preach to me.
