Risk of HIV/Aids by kissing wounded

(Yeah, I know. Terribly dramatic subject header.)

I didn’t know whether to post this in MPSIMS or GQ, but since it will contain a factual question as well, I might as well post it here. Or, if you think it’d be helpful, you could recommend me a more suitable/topic-oriented message board to post this for better/more professional answers. It’s just that this is one of the most active boards I know of and most of you are very kind, so it felt as my safest bet. Anyway.

I’m a bit worried. About three months ago I went on a school trip to Paris. It was great and all, and I met a nice girl at a club one night. She was very pushy, and before I knew it we were making out like crazy in a corner. Like crazy indeed, because she was a bit heavy on the teeth and actually bruised my lips, making me bleed a wee bit. She asked me if I wanted to spend the night and I said thanks but no thanks, we parted as friends and never saw each other again. So; No sex, only tongue to tongue. Yet, I bled. And I can never be 100% sure she wasn’t.

Ok, so for my problem. Just the other day I noticed my oral herpes had made a sneak return. Two tiny blisters at the bottom of my lower lip, right where it meets the lower part of the gum. I had it quite a lot as a youngster but have since had no problems with it. I checked up on possible reasons for why it returned and as I browsed the web, I happened to notice that the return of herpes could possibly be a symptom (spelling?) of HIV, along with a bunch of other symptoms that I, in my state of panic, also thought I had, like being unusually tired and things like that.

I am a healthy chap, haven’t had any major illnesses in my life (smallpox as a kid), no regular colds or flus. Still, I’m worried. I’ve just started dating a girl and I’d kill myself if it turned out I had, in some mysterious way, been infected, and she would get it too. We haven’t had sex yet, and right now all clinics are closed for the summer. Tomorrow I’m going away to her place in the country and I had plans for a wonderful time. Now I can’t stop worrying.

Sooo…

How big do you think the chance is of me having actually been infected? How big is the risk of getting it from snogging only? Or in case both of us were bleeding? You get the picture. I hope.

Thanks,
Andreas

For crying out loud go and get a blood test.

Not big, but real. Go and get a blood test and find out.

Normal ‘snogging’ (how eighties) the risk is almost immeasurable. Snogging with violence as in your case and the risk increases somewhat. Go and get a blood test and find out.

I do. Now go and get a blood test. The chances of her being infected are tiny. The chances of passing it to you in this way are tiny even if she were infected. Tiny, but very real. This must be stressing you out no end. Go and get blood test and end all the worry.

If the worst comes to the worst, HIV isn’t the death sentence it was 20 years ago. It can be treated so as to never develop into AIDS, but the earlier you start treament the better they work. Go and get a blood test.

The next problem is that you should be worried that maybe what you saw isn’t herpes. I had a freind, (yes, real freind, not me) who developed identical symptoms and discovered it was syphillis. Apparently it can develop anywhere there isn’t much exposure to air. The area where the lip joins the gumline is an ideal incubation area and apparently not an uncommon site. Go and get a blood test and find out.

Oh, and in case I didn’t make it clear enogh I really think you should get a blood test.

There is a slight risk you have one of two STDs. You would be horribly irresponsible to have sex with anyone until you are gven the all clear.

I hope you mean chickenpox. If you are old enough to have contracted smallpox aren’t you a little too old enough to be even considering not getting an blood test? Scratch that, if you are old enough to bonk (let’s use all the eightie sterms) you are too old be even considering not getting an blood test.
Oh, and in case I didn’t make it clear enough I really think you should get a blood test.

You said this happened 3 months ago? You should get a blood test now, but for the results to be truly conclusive, you have to wait at least 6 months (that’s for the standard HIV test at least. There is another method, but it isn’t easily available).

I’m sure you’re fine. You should and will worry your ass off, and when the test comes back negative, you’ll have learned your lesson.
