Napier has a tiny little cul-de-sac called Percy Bear Terrace. I actually lived quite close to that street for several years (I was on Oldham Ave), but I only discovered its existence very recently. God damn, check out Percy’s ridiculously small face!
Wellington has a pretty major street called The Terrace (which Google Maps seems to insist on abbreviating to ‘The Ter’). It did sometimes get confusing when I lived on Maurice Terrace, because it was impossible to give directions without mentioning The.
You know those subdivisions where all the streets are named after some theme? I find those incredibly disturbing. Large tracts of the South Shore are named in such a way that all the street names in a particular area start with the same letter. The locals actually refer to the areas by letter: “the S’s,” “the P’s,” etc.
Besides the usual birds, flowers, etc., there’s one in the Montreal suburb of Kirkland where all the streets are named after wine: rue du Merlot, rue Sauvignon, rue Chablis, rue Chianti, etc. I think the only one worse than that is this subdivision in darkest Laval where the streets are named things like rue du Sénateur, avenue des Ambassadeurs, rue de l’Empereur, rue du Monarque, rue du Vicomte, rue de la Duchesse, etc. – all centred on rue des Aristocrates.
Oh God; that reminds me. There’s a neighborhood in Dallas where all the streets have names from Disney–there’s a Snow White, a Peter Pan, and whole bunch of other ones that time has mercifully expunged from my memory. I’m not sure how they got away with that–aren’t these names owned by Disney?
Not particularly funny, but I always thought ‘Rest-and-be-thankful’ was a lovely name for a street. I’m not sure if it refers to the road itself or the tiny layby/photo point at the side of it.
No, both stories have been around a lot longer than Disney, and are part of the public domain. Snow White is an old folk tale, famously collected by the Brothers Grimm. Peter Pan was an invention of J.M. Barrie, and was originally published in 1902.
I stole a couple road sight from out in the boonies somewhere in Kansas from “Reaper Road”, “Squirrel Road” and “Tadpole Road” that I thought were amusing. Now they hang on my wall and amuse more people.
There’s a “Snokomo Road” here that I think is kind of funny. But you know what the best two roads are? There’s an Amy Road, and an Erickson Road. That’s my name! Not only that, but they actually intersect! How weird is that? So somewhere in this town is an Amy Erickson corner.
In Carlisle, Pennsylvania, where I live, we have West and East North, West and East South, North and South West and North and South East. I can’t confirm this without spending an afternoon at the county historical society, but I’m thinking these streets were boundaries of some kind since they’re correct in relation to each other.
