Roads of my forebears.

When I leave the driveway of Stately Mercotan Manor, I find myself on Little Pilinixi road. My great-grandmother was a Pilinixi. It feeds into Pilinixi road, which I can then take to Ploor road. My 4 x great grandma was a Ploor. Making the first right, I find myself on Nadreck road. My 3 x great grandma was a Nadreck. The next right puts me on Mercotan road itself <frisson of delight>> ! I can follow it to Palain road, which while not a direct ancestor, is the name of great-grandma Pilinixi’s mom’s second husband. Bearing left, I reach Worsel road! 5 x great grandma was a Worsel!!

Sadly, the phenomenon ends there. But I figure it’s probably a record here at the SDMB! 6 roads from my house, all sharing names of my family.

Terribly mundane and pointless, but I needed to share it!

That is utterly cool.

… and just how deep did you have to delve into your Doc Smith paperbacks to find all those pseudonyms? I’m trying to remember what the real ones are and I think I’ll have to get out a map.

See, I thought those were real until I got to Mercotan Road, and I thought, “Heyyy, wait a minute …”

Still, very cool. Your family must have been in the area for a long time.

Only a little over a hundred and fifty years. But they emigrated from the old country in family groups. My Ploor ancestress never lived here, but the Ploor cousins did come along with the Pilinixis, the Worsels, the Mercotans, etc.

Looking over my county map, I can find at least another 10 roads which contain my ancestral surnames.

In a way, it’s a tribute to inbreeding.

My married name is on roads all over the place - even interstate highways!!

Woooooow. goggles in awe

Well, if anybody quotes that ever-so-famous line from The Graduate

My forebears settled in the same area as QtM, but I’d probably have to pull out both a family tree (sadly lacking in noted branches) and a county map to find a road matching one of their names.

Hmmm. Well, my family at one time owned much of the acreage that is now Parkton, Maryland. You can find our names scattered on roads around those parts as well.

As a longtime SF fan, I always find it mildly disconcerting to see signs for Narnia Realty (complete with a sillhouette of a blue lion) in Thendara.

One of my great-great-uncles was a developer in the Rochester area back in the 1920s, and there are a couple of roads around there that bear his name.

There’s a county in the NE corner of KY that has my family name (or that of forebears) on several buildings and one or two locations (W Hollow, for example). An exit off one of the interstates near the university here leads to a road with my great-grandmother’s maiden name. It helps me remember that my family has ties to the land and the region.

There’s a whole island with my family name on it in New Brunswick. Probably not a direct ancestor, though - as far as I can tell from the family records, we were all living in PEI until Grandad got adventurous. On the other hand, I am related to one of the Fathers of Confederation (more significant here than south of the border, I expect  )
