I think for the purposes of this museum, “rock and roll” has to be interpreted broadly. Some might say that Smokey Robinson and the Miracles weren’t really a “rock” group, but I think they belong in the Hall of Fame.
Madonna has been hugely popular, has had a very long career, and has set numerous fashion trends. To me, that makes her important enough to go into the Hall of Fame over many acts I like a LOT more musically.
For me the highlights were Bill Withers, who gave a very funny acceptance speech followed by Stevie Wonder’s touching performance of “Ain’t No Sunshine.” John Mayer’s guitar solo during SRV’s “Texas Flood” was a thing to behold. Patti Smith and Laurie Anderson’s tributes to Lou Reed had everyone in tears, me included. Ringo’s induction was pretty much exactly what you’d expect.
