Australian weapons go missing

A 53-year-old Puckapunyal sergeant, whose surname was given only as Read, has been charged with firearms, theft and dishonesty offences. Police and army personnel have removed truckloads of weapons and ordnance from his home, his parents’ home, and other properties since Monday.

Sources said items found included shoulder-mounted rocket launchers, more than 50 hand grenades, at least 30,000 rounds of ammunition, and more than 50 guns. Caterpillar tracks and periscopes for tanks were also found along with tarpaulins, medals and formal and camouflage uniforms. Filing cabinets containing confidential army documents were among the cache. One report said there was enough to fill six freight containers.
