Rolleye smilies in GD

I think this belongs here, since it’s a complaint, but it’s hardly a world-shaking problem.

Some posters use rolleyes more than others, but I find that they are not conducive to actual debate. I consider them an attempt to stifle debate, and they are completely unnecessary if you have any skill at writing at all.

Contempt should be one of the easiest emotions to convey. (I look forward to people doing so in this thread.) If you can’t do it through words, perhaps you can’t handle GD.

Aaaand, that’s all I’ve got.

It isn’t a roll eyes smilie. I’m looking up to you.

The same thing could be said about all smileys. o.O

Maybe it speaks to my lack of skill, but sometimes I think I need a smiley to take the possible sting from my words. In a written format, it’s sometimes difficult to convey that you mean a comment as a gentle tease and not as an insult.

Some few miles from the shores of the Island of Misfit Toys is the Island of Unused Rhetorical Devices. Sad.

I 've had one of the things used on me in GD just in the past 24 hours. It still stings, I tells ya. My worldview has been so irrevocably shattered that I’m amazed I was able to get out of bed this morning.

Remember Victor Borge kkkkkkkkkkk pbbt He thought ffffft and this was pretty funny ffffft that the opposite was true tck hence his tck tck Phonetic Punctuation pbbt tck tck

Thus sayeth tdn.

Again, technically, the default interpretation for any comment outside the BBQ pit is that it is not an insult.

I completely agree with the OP. The frowny faces convey the same level of sophistication as retorting, “I know you are, but what am I?”

Does not.

Shodan

Does Too!

plbbbblt! :stuck_out_tongue:

Meh. Bunch of pussies in GD. Someone does a little smilie at them and they run off crying. They would probably be better off in MPSIMS or IMHO.

That’s something I had to learn. Plus, my references are often obscure to others (though obviously not to me). I remember the “gnat on a camel’s ass” thing that left some people completely unglued, thinking that I intended it in an insulting way. Very few understood the reference to Jesus.

So now, yes, I do punctuate with smilies much more than before. But given my history, for sarcasm I prefer the winkie to the roll eyes. I’m hoping it conveys a kinder gentler sarcasm.

I think some people are missing the point of the OP, which is directed specifically at  in GD. I use them from time to time, but I try to reserve it for replying to truly inane posts. If someone debates in good faith, I’m happy to do so, too. But there are a number of posters how are just idiots and there’s no two ways about it.

Well, as Thumper said, “If you can’t say nuthin’ nice, don’t say nuthin’ at all.” Them’s the rules.

Damn. Just used one.

Sometimes I do lack the skill to convey my frustration in seeing an intelligent person – an ace in the fight against ignorance – say something that is stupid.

Word. I’m pretty passionate about some things and were I to use my words, the paint would blister and peel off walls around for miles. That is when I’m not so flabbergasted that I’m rendered inarticulate. An emoticon serves in both instances.

I think of Rollingeyes Guy as the acceptable version of “fuckwit” in GD. Don’t use it often there, but sometimes nothing else will do…

Oh yeah? Take this!

I roll my eyes at you sirrah!
