I had exactly the same response. I had previously seen Romney as non-descript and vanilla – too bland to provoke any real dislike. Now after that “surrender to the terrorists” cheap shot I actually hate him. I hadn’t thought he was capable of arousing that in me.
While I’m expecting that they beat this dead horse over the next couple of months, I also hope McCain & co. get so enamored with the sound of it that they become lazy in their presumptuousness that everyone in the US automatically feels the same. I don’t doubt for a second that a seasoned Obama, by the time the general election debates come around, would have a reponse to this slander that will be measured, reasonable, and thoroughly authentic in a way that will make this resonate as the cheap shot it is.
Since McCain and Huckabee are still IN the race, presumably they’re pulling for AQ too.
Well, since McCain is also anti-torture, what other interpretation can you possibly draw?

Mitt represents the heart and soul of the Republican Party; therefore, the Republican Party owes him something, anything for conceding. McCain better be nice to Mitt and extend an olive branch. If Mitt isn’t rewarded for his cornerstone conservatism with a consolation prize, there will be blood and gnashing of teeth, or worse, a temper tantrum beyond comprehension.
He’s probably hoping the 71-year-old McCain has a stroke or heart attack or whatever so he can swoop in to pick up the fallen hero’s banner.
Lieberman’s already penciled in for that.
McCain, without such a ‘maverick’ move, will bomb with independents.
