Not sure if I’ve asked this before: AIUI, Meatball got the Fla state legislature to fund more of his immigrant harrassment, the odd thing being- the immigrants don’t even have to be in Florida! If this is true, how can he rationalize this nasty practice if he should get in a situation where he’s somewhat obliged to answer questions? I’m talking about the deliberately cruel relocation program.

I was reading something on another board about the dictator of Turkmenistan, and saw a lot of parallels between him, and DeSantis’ desires.

Immigration is an issue that helps Republicans.
An exception: Giving the Dreamers an easy path to citizenship is a compassionate policy that polls well. But treating recently arrived undocumented immigrants decently is unpopular.
Going way back to the beginning of the thread, the question was what at happens if DeSantis is nominated. It mostly depends on the economy 18 months or so from now. But I think any Republican other than DJT would do well.
It is a little unusual for a politician to pull a purely, blatantly asshole move like fucking with these immigrants. It’s like it’s his fun hobby to bother these people since they have no direct connection to him or his state. He should be shamed for it (I’m a dreamer).
This is a friend of a friend story. Sure, it could be true, but I give it no credence.
It’s beginning to look inevitable. But, how do they build a campaign around this guy? He is not personable. He has a weak , almost irritating voice. His message is not upbeat.
And who do you pair him with? Rick Scott? Huckabee Sanders? OMG no. That would be American Gothic. Hailey or Lake maybe. Lake being the most likely because she is charismatic and can carry off the batshit crazy schtick with a straight face.
If it’s up to DeSantis, he’ll go with Sanders. That’s about as appealing as Wallace/LeMay.
Is he a contender in the sense of ‘does he have a chance’? Unfortunately IMHO yes.
You have to remember that the imaging and messaging at first is not going to be targeted to you or me or most of the posters here. We’re just going to point and snicker, like we did in 2016.
Will he and whomever is running mate is pivot after the primaries to try and appeal to a more broad profile of voters? Probably not. TFG won because he was not Hilary, and Biden won because he was not TFG. I am hoping Biden will win again because DeSantis it too much like TFG.
True, but I wonder about his appeal to any group. Trump is the ‘crazy uncle’ funny. lovable guy who says stuff other people just think. You can pick and choose from his rambling babble. DeSantis is deliberate and mean. Sanders is Puritan Holy. Those two aren’t Trump.
Pivoting will be difficult for DeSantis. He has dug a deep hole. He and Lake might, instead, go full on bat shit crazy Trump. That might be their best bet. It could draw crowds. Same schtick with new chants.
I keep remembering campaigns like Dole and McCain. Guys who had it all but could not draw a crowd. Then along comes crazy Donald and they flock to the tent.
Looks like our boy has a bestseller now, too.
Subtitling it “Florida’s Blueprint for America’s Revival” ISTM invites the Dem candidate to highlight all the things happening in Florida that Americans don’t want for their country. (And by “Americans,” I mean the slim percentage of undecided or unmotivated voters in a few purple states. Unfortunately, no one else matters.)

He’s theoretically on a “book tour” to promote the book, but he’s talking like he’s campaigning and there’s a lot of speculation that this tour is really a pre-campaign warmup to get attention before he officially announces his candidacy.
