It might also make the remaining primary opponents stronger. (Okay let’s be honest, it’s only Haley now.)
If Haley drops out it’s a completely different story. He’s effectively running unopposed at that point. Instead of now where nobody is willing to completely oppose him out of fear of MAGA retaliation. But opposition still exists somewhat.
Trump will say it but I still think DeSantis and Haley have absolutely no chance of serving in a second Trump administration in any capacity whatsoever. Having the nerve to run against him at all is a profound betrayal (to Trump) and the Republican primary system falling apart one and a half contests in just feeds Trump’s narrative that he was the only choice all along, he already won before a single vote was cast and anyone who ran against him was only doing it to insult him. He may not be able to remember what day of the week it is but he’ll always remember who crossed him.
Why? That hadn’t been a problem in the past for Trump. Lindsay Graham and Ted Cruz attacked Trump viciously but then later completely pulled a 180 after he won the nomination.
As long as you suck up to him later, and he thinks he can use you, he’s happy to be your ally. That’s how he works. He doesn’t have any principles. He doesn’t care what you said about him a week ago if you’re now praising him and can do something for him.
Remember that Trump doesn’t have people working for him that he likes. They’re pawns to him. They’re cannon fodder and people that he’ll push onto a grenade or under a bus when it becomes useful to him.
So to him, DeSantis and Haley might have a place in his future plans if they change their tune and sing his praises. Ron is already doing that. He probably thinks the best revenge is to make your enemies lick your boots and jump when you tell them to.
I’m sure that’s true. I remember when Romney dined with him to discuss a role in Trump’s cabinet, and I’ve no doubt that Trump did it in anticipation of Romney groveling for a job Trump had no intention of giving him.
But has anyone critical of Trump ever been given a cabinet position or key role in his administration? Some prior critics became allies, but did any ever get inside the inner sanctum? Maybe there were, but I can’t think of any at the moment.
It’s not just that he was steamrolled by Donald Trump. DeSantis never appeared to want to save the GOP. He was more interested in making it a more ravenous, angrier and intolerant party. That worked for Trump, but didn’t work for the governor with all the charisma of burned toast.
