Ronda Rousey is awesome

I’d love to see Rousey go up a class for that fight.

Yeah, a pure judo background just gets you knocked out in high-level MMA these days. Those guys probably couldn’t wrestle her very effectively, but the better ones hit like a jackhammer compared to any woman in MMA. They’re not Mike Tyson, but they might as well be against Rousey.

See post #14.

Oops. You are correct. I missed the reference to Justino there.

It won’t happen. Ronda herself has said (my paraphrasing) that while she would never back down from a fight, she doesn’t think it would set a good precedent to have a man hitting a woman on national TV.

It’s entirely possible that Ronda Rousey could beat the best man in her weight class. It’s more likely that a man would out strike her but if she can lock that armbar on a man he will have to submit just as readily as a woman. It’s not going to happen though.

She has to start fighting bigger women to improve her status because she has no competition in her own weight class. That’s hardly necessary for her to do, no one else has ever been so thoroughly dominant in a weight class in MMA, Mike Tyson’s early career in boxing might be analogous. Heavier women will challenge her grappling and striking skills, but still be vulnerable to that armbar.

Entirely possible, or not going to happen? I mean it’s entirely possible I could beat Lebron 1v1 if I got lucky enough to sink half court 3s the whole game.

What percentage of fights do you think she’d win against men with winning records in her weight class?

More possible than you outscoring Lebron. I’d imagine she has a fair chance against at least one of the top ten men in that weight class. She has a lot of experience in judo and submission holds that may be better than that of her potential male opponents. She’s not built like a girl, she’s quite muscular for her size, and her upper body is well developed. I don’t think any man that size can survive her armbar if she gets it on, and she is damn quick at locking that thing in.

Rousey is on record as saying that she wouldn’t fight a man, not only because no fight commission would ever sanction such a fight but also because she thinks a man hitting a woman should never be legitimized.

I’m a fan of Rousey but the latter seems kind of like an excuse to me. It’s not like boxing or martial arts matches have legitimized physical violence among the population at large. Plus she had no problem taking on and beating the crap out of a couple of guys who were part of a group harassing her and a friend and trying to block their exit from a movie theater.

Also, her Judo expert mother has gone on record saying that a woman’s physiology is different from that of a man and that a 135 lb. man and a 135 lb. woman are not equal.

So I’m thinking there’s some walking back going on and Rousey’s camp is more or less dog-whistling that she would indeed be likely to lose a match against a male fighter, even at her own weight.

Rousey will never fight a man. Contrary to contentions above, she is really not that visibly well-developed. I agree that she is strong, but there are a few layers of fat over that muscle, in her gut and upper-arm areas.

How ever strong she is, if she is clocked by one of the leading men in her weight class she’s done. Done.

I’m not disagreeing with what you say. She is well developed for a woman in that weight class and she has no reason to lose any more weight. However, I don’t know if any of the men in that weight class are good enough at punching to take her out. I mean I don’t know because I don’t know who they are. It would take a guy that can connect with a strong punch, maintain his balance, and not leave his arm hanging out. I think there are plenty of men in that weight class who couldn’t do that.

It’s all pointless to consider, it’s a no-win situation for her. She’d lose to the champion, and anyone she’d feel safe fighting would make it look like a stupid stunt.

Some silly Ronda Rousey fun.

And here she is today with The Rock and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

I’m not sure how much longer this girl is gonna be fighting. She’s pretty much the real life badass that Michelle Rodriquez pretends to be when she’s acting. She’s got two movies under her belt already, so presumably she’s acquitting herself adequately as an actress, and I can see her with a career at least like Rodriquez’s, if not perhaps becoming a breakaway action star on her own.

I wouldn’t be surprised if her WM appearance and “handling” of Stephanie McMahon was in exchange for some movie deal with WWE Studios.

She should just jump in and do some wrestling now while she’s hot. She’ll make more money in a year from WWE than her whole career at UFC. When she comes back MMA fans will think her matches against weak opponents will be exciting again for a while.

It’s pretty crazy that UFC can get away with paying their fighters so little. I read she only had $65k guaranteed for her last fight. Even thought she could expect to get more on the backend for ppvs, that is an absurdly low number.

Her success came at a big price: massive concussions:

Strength is directly measurable and we have decades of information from both powerlifting and Olympic lifting, to be able to compare across genders.

In theory, you could use formulas like these to guess a likely size of man that would be competitive with her, then run her and a few guys through the big movements to see if you can find some guys with a similar strength level.
