Ronda Rousey is awesome

14 seconds!

I fixed the title for you as you asked.

I’da been pissed if I bought that whole fight, just for it to last less than the intro to a Van Halen song.

Great for a new story, but if I’m paying that much I wanna see a fight

I was absolutely amazed. Her last two fight are a combined 30 seconds. Not since Mike Tyson has anyone impressed me so much. I don’t mind paying to see a fight be finished in 14 seconds - I saw someone amazing do something amazing. Historic. Truly impressive and inspiring. If the fight ended after 14 seconds due to a bad stoppage by the ref or an eye poke (as happened with an earlier fight on the card) or something like that, then I’d be pissed off.

I admit that I don’t really follow today’s MMA, and women’s MMA doesn’t sound like the kind of thing I’d pay to see. But damn, 14 seconds? In a league that’s absolutely ruthless in weeding out bums and no-hopes? That’s pretty amazing.

I think Rousey has a good chance to become the Michael Phelps of UFC, just so incredibly dominant that even if you don’t care about the sport, you have to take notice.

“What the hell is a ‘pan flute’?” “I dunno, but this Zamfir guy totally rocks it!”

She’s won four of her last five title defenses in the first round. And it’s taken her all of a minute and thirty-six seconds to win her last three fights (66, 16, and 14 seconds respectively). Incredible!

She certainly is awesome. But how much of her dominance is from lack of competition? I follow the men’s side a bit but not the women’s side. It seems like there are currently only at most 10 women that could be considered elite. Of those the only one who might be close is Miesha Tate and she was beat twice by Rousey. But at least she got out of the 1st round.

Rousey offers Zingano a rematch.

The lack of competition argument is a pretty good one. Women’s mma is just starting to get popular, largely because of her. I think that as the sport matures and gets bigger, she’ll have a harder time whipping ass the way she does now.

Still though, she’s as impressive in her fights as any other professional fighter you can name, past or present.

Death. Taxes. Rousey by armbar.

I’m calling it now: Ronda Rousey will be the first woman to fight a man.

Looks like she may have already accidentally broken the ribs of at least one poor schmuck.

Let’s go to the quarry and throw stuff down there! That’s not quite as much fun as it was watching Johnny Knoxville [del]fight[/del]get his ass kicked by Butterbean!

Why would she want to? I suppose there might be decent money in it, but I think it’d probably hurt her brand quite a bit.

Exactly.

Ronda Rousey is a brand at this point - a way to attract females to the sport, be it competing, training, or simply viewing.

Rousey is dominate because she’s literally been doing this her entire life. Her mother was heavily involved, and successful, in Judo competitions. A young Ronda gets involved, is wildly successful, and then transitions into MMA.

Most of her competition has been training or fighting only fairly recently whereas Ronda has been doing it since she was a small child and competed at the highest of levels (Olympics).

The rumblings are that her and Cristiane Justino are trying to fight. If this comes to fruition, it would be Rousey’s most legitimate opponent yet.

I don’t follow the sport enough to know these things but would she even have a chance against a man? In her weight class I mean?

No.

I don’t know if it’s that cut and dried. Her victories aren’t about overpowering people, and in every one of her fights, a man would have had to submit under the same circumstances her victims…er, I mean opponents…did.

Maybe I’m wrong, but I think she’d at least be able to professionally compete at her weight level against men. She might not be a champion or a serious championship contender, but I bet she’d do well enough to be competitive at close to the top levels.

I’ve seen her go a few rounds in training with a few guys. She is great, they were all stronger by a lot but she didn’t submit any of them. Only 1 or 2 of the guys were good enough to ever compete in the UFC. I would predict a knockout by the guy that she ever fights (if). Every men’s standup was light years better than hers.

But I hope she never fights men for real, she is super dominate over all other women right now. She is also the goal of all MMA women and her presence is making them all better and making them train harder. IMO of course.

Yeah, if you assume she gets a guy in an armbar then she’d probably win, but she’d never get anyone into that position.

She’d be able to beat some men, sure, but they’d be like mediocre college wrestlers that went to 5 kick-boxing classes, not a professional fighter. Men, even at the same weight are significantly stronger and faster and professional MMA fighters have had significantly competition to get where they are than she is.

Wow. 19 posts in a Rousey thread and no mention of Cris Cyborg. Impressive.
