She knocked out Bethe Correia in less than a minute. The only story is she didn’t win with the armbar again. Now she’s a threat as a striker and a grappler. No fewer women in her division have a chance against her now because none did before.
She won 34 seconds into the first round, this time by a knockout which, in my opinion, is more impressive; I was getting a little tired of the armbar.
That was a thing that happened. The best 34 seconds I’ve had with a woman since I lost my virginity. That didn’t just kick ass, it also kicked donkey and mule. Go Ronda! (I’m a little drunk.)
I really don’t think these poor women who get into the cage with her have any realistic idea what they’re up against. Sure, they watch videos of her fights and they know her size, weight and tactics. But there’s no one they can spar or train with who can come close to dishing out what Rousey dishes out in terms of speed, power, agility and ferocity. They get into the cage, if they’re lucky they get to spar a bit like Correia did, then there’s a blur, and they’re toast. I doubt if Correia was even able to mentally process what was happening to her once Rousey got going, other than to try to get the hell away from it.
Here’s a video of the fight on Youtube. It may not still be up by the time anyone gets to see it.
I don’t agree with you on a lot,** Starving Artist**, so I’ll take a rare opportunity to give you a “plus one” on your post.
The incredible thing about tonight’s fight was that Rousey won in Correia’s wheelhouse. Pure striking, no judo at all. Some people at the bar were saying the fight ended prematurely, but you could see Correia’s eyes rolling. They were right to stop it.
Thanks. I appreciate that.
Yeah, Correia was completely overwhelmed and helpless by the time she went down. She’d likely have been seriously hurt had the fight been allowed to continue.
I’m seeing where in the post fight press conference Correia’s trying to say she slipped and then Ronda was on her. What actually happened if you watch this clip is that Rousey got a leg behind her, got her off balance and pushed her over. It wasn’t a slip, it was a takedown.
Knowing practically nothing about MMA and even less about women’s MMA, is Rousey in danger of being thought of as similar to Tyson? Very fast knockouts that aren’t worth the price of PPV.
The question now is: where does Rousey go from here? She’s crushed all her competition so far. Start fighting girls above her weight class? More than one fight on the same card? It’s hard to see how she can top herself (not that she has too, I just want a reason to get her back in the ring. She’s amazing to watch).
Well, there have been accusations that she’s been ducking Cyborg for a while. That could happen if Cyborg ever tests clean.
Yes, very much so. Kind of like Tyson in his championship run, Rousey’s current PPV buys are fueled not by the expectation of a competitive fight (Rousey-Correia had the most lopsided odds in UFC title fight history), but by her personal magnetism and by a healthy helping of “Let’s see her do something violent.” Much like Tyson busting up the Jose Ribaltas of the world in the mid 80s.
Hopefully she doesn’t fall victim to Tyson’s downward spiral of arrogance and undertraining (to say nothing of his personal missteps).
I think it’s more likely she’s going to start saying “I’m going to go make a shitty action movie. I’ll be back in a year. Have someone ready for me to fight,” and leave the UFC to try and work plausible, credible challengers up the ladder.
Tests clean AND makes 135. The latter part might be the harder of the two, as Cyborg is incredibly jacked for a woman even at 145.
To be fair, Tyson/Ribalta was a 10th round TKO by Tyson in an era when most of Tyson’s fights were 1st-3rd round knockouts. Ribalta, while not unique in withstanding Tyson for 10 rounds, was one of the very rare few who did.
Rousey could move up. Or fight catchweight.
If I was her I’d just stay where I was and cash in.
An ESPN commentator had something to consider. Tyson could draw a crowd fighting a ham sandwich or Frank Bruno. The same for Oscar De La Hoya. Rhonda isn’t quite there yet, they have to come up with opponents for her. That part keeps getting tougher. Cris Cyborg doesn’t weigh that much more than Rhonda, she may want to put on a few extra pounds but she’s going break Cyborg’s arm and she doesn’t need extra weight to do that.
The only thing we need to know is if Rhonda has the endurance to make it through multiple rounds with a skilled opponent. They haven’t been skilled enough so far to find out.
I really wonder if Rousey does any secret training with men, and I don’t just mean a trainer holding a bag. I think publicly, her scoffing at the idea of fighting guys is something that keeps the focus on her being simply a great fighter and not just being seen as a great female fighter. But if I were her, I’d have secret male sparring partners so I can push myself to the limit and test my moves against different styles, body types, weights etc. Something where the existing population of female fighters would be harder press to find for her
I’ve seen video of her training with bj penn and Gerard mousasi
Her win made me happy after Correia made some classless remark about the suicide of Rousey’s father. I was pretty dismissive of watching women fight until I say Rousey compete, she is an excellent fighter and a lot stronger than her physique suggests at a casual glance. It also doesn’t hurt that she is super sexy!
There’s nothing secret about it. Female fighters train with male fighters.
