Roommate search

I rent a house with a guy who’s my dad’s age, and we’re trying to find another guy to fill the third bedroom. We have an advertisement in the local paper which specificaly says that we’re looking for a male roommate. My current roommate is of a generation and upbringing that leaves him feeling uncomfortable with the idea of a female roommate.

According to my roommate, who takes the calls that come in, we are getting calls almost every day from women. The ad has been running for more than a month, and maybe four men have called. But women call every day.

Why do potential male roommates seem so scarce, and why do women keep responding to an ad that specifically asks for men?

Well, while I wouldn’t answer an ad that specifies men, I’d rather live with men. I’ve roomed with both men and women before, and I find men easier to room with…they tend to be messier on the average but also more laid-back.

I know that I usually prefer good roommates regardless of their gender. However, you might try an online service such as craigslist and see if you get better results.
