Roseanne Part Two? No Thank You

Here’s a dream ending for this abortion… Have our two tRumptards get on a bus to Texas because they think there are fat, juicy ‘Wall’ jobs awaitin’. Find out it’s not being built any time soon and it will be manned by DRONES and the military. They get into a scuffle with some feelthy Mexicans and all get blown away by the National Guard (including D.J.). The. End. Oh, please please please!

Can we all at least agree that Harris is a stupid, stupid first name for a girl?
mmm

I thought maybe it was just a little stiff out of the gate and would get going after a few episodes so I just gave it one more shot. Terrible.

People love it because it’s exactly the same show it always was. It’s just like the shows we grew up on. Nobody’s changed at all, and the whole family still either lives together or spends all their time there. Roseanne, Becky, and Darlene are still picking at each other.

Those are exactly the reasons I hate it. It’s for the viewer permanently stuck in the fantasy of the past. The TGIF-style bad acting, setup-joke-insult pattern, and the laugh track aren’t helping.

Even if the acting and writing were better, still no. I find it depressing to watch, because the Conner kids turned out so miserable and unsuccessful. That’s not something I want to tune into to make myself laugh. I just sat there thinking “some people really think this is cool” watching a whole family that’s made no progress in 30 years, can’t afford new carpeting, and can’t hold decent jobs. That’s not nostalgia, it’s just sadness.

Nah, it’s the one thing I liked. It’s her Granny Rose’s (cringe) maiden name.

And that would make perfect sense. No, not all conservatives believe in the sex rings, but those who believe in sex rings are all conservatives. So it makes sense that they would hold conservative views.

What’s more, while not all conservatives support Trump, the people who support Trump by and large identify themselves as conservatives. It’s not surprising at all that Grandma Rose supports a conservative position on a subject.

Sure, the show itself is pushing liberal ideas, with how it handles Mark and the “her body, her choice” stuff. But it does so by having the grandparents parrot the conservative ideas, but be won over by the liberal (dare I say, SJW) concept when push comes to shove, because of family. It’s more like it’s about conservatives learning that liberal ideas aren’t so bad.

As for the water faucet thing, I think the reactions here are bizarre. Even in my family where spanking was allowed, that would be considered horrible. You don’t ever make physical contact with a kid out of anger, period. Spanking is a considered punishment, and grabbing is only to get the child out of physical danger quickly.

Holding a kid’s head under a faucet would be considered bullying in school so why would it be okay for a parent? That took the cute, nice show I saw in the first two episodes and made me very reluctant to keep watching.

It’s not cool. It’s just life. And the show is about finding the humor in the lives that their target audience experiences. This is what working class life is like. You don’t make progress. You survive.

That is precisely why Trump’s “jobs” promise was appealing to people like Roseanne Conner.

Do people overanalyze all sitcoms, or is this one especially ripe because of it’s star’s political leanings? I’m getting a very weird, way too serious, vibe up in here

Yes.

Yes.

And how’s that MAGA stuff workin’ for ya?

Trust me, I know from surviving and working class life.

I enjoy shows like The Middle, sometimes even Mom or Superstore if I really need to see a sitcom, so it’s not that there’s no other representation out there.

There’s just something about this particular version that I find depressing and unwatchable. Maybe it’s the reality that the pattern repeats with the 2nd and 3rd generation and that even the show’s format hasn’t progressed.

Yeah, the lack of change in decor wasn’t surprising to me… I’ve seen enough examples of that in real life, especially at the homes of older relatives. There’s even a cousin on my mom’s side of the family who has a vintage avocado green kitchen. Heck, in 2006 when we sold the house I grew up in, the carpet and wallpaper in the bedrooms dated to the early '80s. The carpet was in rather good shape for its age (yay JP Stevens?).

You forgot

Such a clever wit the slur was repeated…

Meanwhile I seem to remember much wailing and gnashing of teeth over use of terms like “libtards” around here in the past.

Probably should’ve just reported it, but your post is what made it stand out in its absence, so it’s a reply instead. I’m not personally bothered, by use of “tard” just that there’s maybe a double standard (or more likely mods just never read the posts in question).

Roseanne shoving Harris in the sink left me cheering btw.

It does, but it’s unevenly enforced. It depends on whose ox is being gored.

Did you read the OP? This thread is for crapping on Roseanne.

I don’t see the Connors replacing still usable furniture unless someone dies. My grandmother got a convertible couch when she moved into a new house that ended up in my first apartment 40+ yrs later. Admittedly it was reupholstered at least once.

Yes, it’s hilarious how much some people are getting worked up over this show. No Trump references since the premiere, and only 1 confirmed Tump voter & one implied one in the cast.

So far the only thing we know about DJ’s circumstance other than he’s 1 half of a dual career military couple. Also if you count David as a Conner kid I picture him less miserable & more successful without Darlene.

It did occur to me after posting that the thread title & OP suggested that the real threadcrappers might be the people who really weren’t finding all that much wrong with the sitcom. But I thought we had moved on from the original premise in any event.

Was it ever mentioned what job Darlene had from which she was fired? If so, I missed it.

Not yet.

If you didn’t like the original you won’t like the reboot because it’s pretty much the same. But if you loved the original for showing how a struggling middle class family lived and dealt with life’s foibles, with humor, then you’ll love the reboot with it’s dealings on the issues of today.

I’ve seen the first couple of episodes now. And I love it. I didn’t have high hopes going in but it was exactly what I wanted from a Roseanne reboot. All the characters fell back into their roles effortlessly and convincingly. They got a few things addressed, Dan’s death, the two Becky’s, out of the way so they can move forward and they did.

Yeah the Conner’s are lower middle class and that’s why they went for Trump because he promised jobs and that’s all they really cared about.

But the show moves forward and the Conner’s accept gay Darlene and her life and the life of her kid who is either Trans or just a free joyful spirit that spreads that into the hearts of Dan and Roseanne who are unsure at first but then completely on his side because he is theirs and they love him. They don’t accept the other kid who is a brat and disrespectful towards the family that is trying to help her. It shows that despite their conservative lives they are still human beings who love and accept their family, (and even reluctantly, Becky’s choice,) and all the weirdness and quirkiness that that comes with because at the heart of the show, and the original, they are just people trying to make it through this big wide world, just like the rest of us, the best they know how.

Like the Conners being older and how they deal with bad knees and needing to go upstairs and get affordable prescriptions for all their aches and pains and dealing with their grown kids and their grand kids and the generational divides in parenting styles and ultimately making fun of it all.

The Conner’s use humor as their way of dealing with the life they have and trying to make the best of it.

Darlene’s not gay. The actress who plays her is, but not the character. Unless you know something I don’t, and they’re going to reveal that that’s why she’s divorced.

I know! It’s weird how the “report” button only works for some members and not for others. What’s that you say? Anyone can report a post for “threadcrapping”? Huh.

Anyhoo - I liked the original show up to the lottery win which was a total shark-jump. I think Roseanne (the person, not the character) is a loon of variable political persuasion but when I get a chance to watch the new show I’ll give it a chance for the sake of what was good about the original series.
