Were a moderator, except for TubaDiva, unilaterally to step up and say something like, “Sorry, NewGuy, I didn’t mean to be rude. I had a bad day. Just try to stay within the forum descriptions from now on,” I reckon the world might end.
Leander, in general I would agree with you. If a new member accidentally posted a General Question in CCC, then I would hope that Arnold would nicely move it. Likewise, if someone were to post a thoughtful “help my daughter choose a Science Fair experiment” thread in GQ, I would hope that manhattan would be charitable and gently move or suggest re-opening it to IMHO. However, the thread in question here was titled “I have a question”, and the sum total of the text was “Why are Latinas soooo hot?” No real thought put into the question at all.
So we have 1. an inane question, 2. stupidly phrased 3. that the OP put very little thought into 4. and posted in the wrong forum. That’s four strikes by my count. If someone entered my house and peed in the kitchen sink, I imagine I’d be a little snarky, too.
[Standing ovation.] Encore! Encore!

For a namecaller you sure are sensitive. Maybe you should stop throwing all those rocks in that glass house of yours, or at least stop complaining about the drafts.
For the OP- Given the quality of this OP, and the one you started in the wrong forum, you sure are off to a good start.
:smack:
Uh, leander? “Why is it soooooooo hard to read the forum descriptions?” is not ‘tearing him a new one’. It is, at best, mild sarcasm. Not, I suppose, the gentlest way one could advise the poster of a serious faux pas, but not out of line with the overall tone of The Straight Dope or of these associated boards …
Eg., from a classic amongst classics :
Yes, Cecil could have been gentler in his response. But then, he wouldn’t be the Cecil we all know and love, would we?
That’s how I had interpreted it. I would put it in line with someone tracking mud on your carpet, and you looking at the mess, then the person, and asking if your doormat looked too lovely to muss up in comparison. Perhaps not the most polite way to reply, but I doubt Miss Manners would faint dead away at hearing this, and after all, the rules of the household (including ‘no tracking in mud’) are posted on this house’s theoretical door.
Miller, never has anyone labeled me semi-literate in all my life.
Thank you, usually it’s illiterate or ignorant but, semi-literate, hell that’s a step up for me.
Leander, I greatly appreciate you coming to my aid throughout this thread. If I were to ever meet you in person I would have no qualms about sitting down to have a drink with you or calling you friend.
My head is starting to hurt with all this writing.
Cool, I see from across the room that The Simpsons is about to start.
It’s my understanding that Homer will say or do something stupid in this episode.
You see Miller, The Simpsons is considered high culture in my home.
Sir, your hypothesis is based upon false premises. Manhattan has no “pent-up anger;” he kicks puppies and clubs baby seals just before he logs on to moderate, thereby ensuring he can review posts in a calm and even-handed manner.
Sua
No, no, you’ve got it backwards. He kicks baby seals and clubs puppies, just to confuse PETA. He’s a prick that way.
