If someone entered my house and made a mistake, this is how I would greet them. Not with rudeness. And if any of my “housemates” decided to tear him a new one, I’d be ashamed of them.
That’s how I was brought up.
Well, she was kind enough to make an exception in my case. Twice over, in fact, as she overlooked my gasbaggery as well.

My point was that if it were my house, and my guests behaved as you did towards a newbie, I would be ashamed of their behavior.
