OK, next exercise: read the following statement: “Good morning”
You can read it to be cheerful and welcoming. You can read it to be minimally polite and perfunctory. You can even read it to be a rude dismissal. (“Good morning!” snorted the duchess, meaning that the conversation was now ended.) In short, you bring as much (or more) to your reading than the moderator put into it.
There is no reason for you to be given a rude response, here or in any forum. However, it appears that this board has become yet another place where people can anonymously flex their “snarky” muscles and vent any pent-up anger that they don’t have the courage to do in real life. This charge is apparently being led by a few mods, though there are several caring, thoughtful ones who actual wish to further the purpose of this board (remember what that is anyone?) rather than stroke their silly egos.
My advice: follow the rules and avoid those who feel that even the slightest authority affords lack of civility.
And this is what the Progressive Left has come to.

I’m really not sucking up. I swear.
Maybe I just don’t get it, but the “snarkyness” was one of the things that kept me here. In case you haven’t caught on yet, Cecil is known, not just for his intelligence, but also his biting wit. Sarcasm, irony, he’s got the full boat. I would expect nothing less from the moderators at the Straight Dope Message Board. It may take some people awhile to develop a thicker skin, but this board does try to keep the example set by the Perfect Master.
And to suggest it is a power trip, ego stroke, or pent up anger is just plain silly. Enjoy it, it’s part of the atmosphere here. If not, I hear there are openings over at the Miss Manners, or Dear Abby Message Boards.

My feelings weren’t hurt, I’m just amazed at the childishness of some of the people on this thread.
I have no intentions of leaving the board, I like it here. Most of the responses to my OP seem like they would be more at home in the back of a school bus. It’s a free country so your free to make fools of yourselves all you like, it’s quit entertaining, please continue.
