okay, almost everyone owns or at least has seen the Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer special. Now, we get explanations of why all the misfit toys are misfits(the jack-in-the-box is a charlie-in-the-box, the train has square wheels, etc). My question is: what’s up with the doll? There is a little doll with pigtails that there appears to be nothing wrong with. Yet, somehow, she is a misfit. Any theories as to why?
My sister and I have had this discussion every year since the sixties. The only thing we can figure out is she doesn’t have a nose!
Or possibly, doesn’t do “anything”, like cry, or wet her pants, or any of the things she says other dolls do.
Of course, Raggedy Ann didn’t do a thing, either, and look at her popularity.
Personally, I think they threw her in because she has a soprano voice and all the other toys were masculine, and the singing would be ridiculous with that high voice in there. She was the token female toy.
Wasn’t there a thread that addressed this issue, as well as the Herkie/Hermie one too? And it had something to do with the doll’s mental or emotional problems…I know, kind of deep for a kid’s special.
Since tonight is the night CBS airs Rudolph, I find it fitting to link to one of my all time favorite SDMB threads. From Christmas of last year, a wacky thread that made Threadspotting.
This thread features humorous insights into the poor lil’ doll’s problem, and a look at a bird assassination attempt that puts JFK and O.J. to shame.
Yes, that thread also features insight into the Hermie/Herbie Debate (and a “Is Hermie Gay?” in there too.) Also, bashing Santa Claus, “Who’s Burl Ives?,” and the fact that, if you believe the opening credits, the show was produced in 1064.
Also featured on that link are the details of the gruesome Mis-Fit Murder Scene. (About half way down page one).
Watching the end credits as the horror is about to unfold never fails to give me the willies. And all this time we were led to believe that the fat guy and his band of co-hort elves could be trusted.
