Rudy Giuliani seriously injured in a car accident (Breaking News)

I’m a little disappointed in NPR that they are carrying the story, of course with the attribution of “his spokesman says.” Although this is not a scientific observation, my sense in the past has been that NPR is reluctant to run a breaking news story without better sources.

Unless they had specified that it was the act of re-entering the highway after having pulled off (to Render Aid) that caused the crash. And they didn’t.

No, it does seem likely that it’s the presence of some female at the scene that has to be explained away.

And yes, as @Dewey_Finn intimated, there are questions about Rudy’s finances that deserve answers.

At the request of the OP, this is designated a Breaking News thread. Please observe all attendant rules. Thanks.

When large sums of money are involved, there tends to be a fairly large amount of slush. It was like the billionaire investor who once described his experience of being financially totally wiped out, losing, as he put it, every penny he had. So he flew to Hawaii for a few weeks of rest and relaxation and to consider how he would make a comeback.

Always be careful in traffic.

I’m no Giuliani fan, but I do wish him a complete recovery.

A “fractured vertebra” could mean anything from complete and total paralysis, to a cracked condyle (one of those bumps on the bone, to which muscles and the like attach).

For what it’s worth, the New York Times is covering the story, as reported by the head of security. The New York Times article mentions further Twitter posts from Rudy Giuliani thanking his business partner Maria Ryan, a nurse practitioner from New Hampshire, for overseeing his care and another from Andrew Giuliani that acknowledged the crash.

I saw nothing in that report that made any mention whatsoever of the driver/car that allegedly rear-ended him. That’s a, shall we say, curious omission.

I think this is going too far. Rudy was a good man once before he turned to drink and election denial. He fought organized crime as prosecutor and as mayor. I do not think it implausible that he would help the victim of a crime.

His help consisted of telephoning the police, and staying until they arrived. Not exactly something that would require any great risk or sacrifice, on his part. Just a little bit of ordinary everyday decency. I don’t think he is so far gone that he wouldn’t do this.

That too.

I mean, my first read of the story was that the implication was that he aided someone in the midst of domestic abuse, and as a result of his heroism, the abuser chased him down and rear-ended him.

There is a Pit thread on this topic, if you want to express your feelings there:

There is some reliable-sounding info in the television news story:

Rudy Giuliani seriously hurt in NH crash after helping domestic violence victim, statement says

I just heard it announced at the beginning of NBC Nightly News (5:30PM Central time).

There is a State Police press release:

NH State Police Investigating Crash Involving Former NYC Mayor

The part about Giuliani being flagged down by a domestic violence victim seems currently unsupported.

Even if true, it wasn’t Rudy who stopped the car (he wasn’t driving), and it’s all but certain that he didn’t render any aid to the victim. His driver may have, but it sure as hell wasn’t Rudy.

It’s an interesting claim since 911 calls can be released through a public records request.

Yeah, how did he know she was a DV victim? Did she have a sign hanging around her neck?

You say he was seriously injured and 81 years old (who take longer to heal)?

Yet the New York Times is reporting:

Rudolph W. Giuliani was released from the hospital on Monday afternoon after a car crash in Manchester, N.H., on Saturday night, according to Arthur L. Aidala, a friend of Mr. Giuliani.

Mr. Aidala said Mr. Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City and lawyer for President Trump, was in high spirits when they spoke by phone. “I have some healing to do, but I’m otherwise in great shape,” Mr. Giuliani said, according to Mr. Aidala.

and Trump is doing something to cheer him up too:

The news, not the press release, says he was treated & released at the hospital ED. So he got his cage rattled in a non-injury MVA & was sent home.

Not exactly heroism.
