Russia invades Ukraine {2022-02-24} (Part 1)

That’s great…really…but it’s too bad they didn’t do that like 3 weeks ago. It will certainly help, but it would have helped a lot more if it had been early enough to get the weapons into the hands of the troops who would be using them and some time to familiarize themselves with them before they had to do it in combat.

Yes, it would have been better, without a doubt.

Those seemed like disappointments that the US Army nonetheless muddled through. But will Putin accept any setbacks like a mature adult, like Grant after the first day at Shilo: “no matter, we’ll whip them tomorrow,” or will he ramp up and kill the civilians just to “keep his pimp hand strong?”

Yeah, it becomes a problem when you need a medical kit and what you find instead is a note that says “What’s good for M & M Enterprises is good for the country.”

I linked to a US Army staff college history upthread, and while I remember the US had serious issues during the invasion, I wasn’t aware that the advance was halted nearly a week.

If nothing else, Ukraine is going to have a bumper crop of cultural heroes out of this. Zelensky, the garrison at Snake Island, Vitaly Volodymyrovych at the Henichesk bridge. Hell, even the Ghost of Kiev, even if he is fictional.

They certainly haven’t collapsed as some predicted early on. And their resistance seems to be firming up as things go. Early on it did look like the Russians were really driving hard, and that Ukrainian resistances was less than coherent. I think that Ukraine wasn’t mentally prepared for this attack as they should have been, nor were their pre-invasion planning what it should have been (based on what happened in those early stages), but I don’t think there is anything wrong with Ukraine’s and Ukrainians willingness to fight. And I think you are right…they will come out of this with a lot of cultural hero’s and icons, and probably a new sense of themselves as a country and nationality…assuming they come out of this at all.

Ukraine has a comedian as president. We had a joke. (And a bad joke, at that.)

When I read RickJay’s post with A COMEDIAN in all caps my thought was…Ukraine has one of the Watchmen as president! He’s going to fuck those Russians up, especially if he can get Dr. Manhattan on his side!

I hope the RPG’s arrive within a few days.

Ah, that is why you elected Reagan? But did you have to follow through all the way down to the Apprentice?

Just for kicks, here’s the transcript:

MOTORIST: Are you guys broken? Broken down?

RUSSIAN: Out of fuel.

MOTORIST: Can I tow you back… To Russia?

[laughter]

MOTORIST: Do you know where you’re going?

RUSSIAN: No, no… [inaudible] To Kyiv, dammit. F__k off… What do they say on the news?

MOTORIST: Well, while everything is on our side, yours and prisoners surrender well. Because the boys also do not know where they are going. And I asked the whole column, people like you. No one knows where they are and where they are going.

Can I just say, that motorist is also bad ass? Even without fuel, that crew probably has enough weapons and ammo to really mess this guy up, but he doesn’t even hesitate to not only talk to them, but to shit talk them.

Even if Ukraine runs out of bullets, they seem to have a bottomless cache of weaponized ridicule. That’s probably the best weapon against an egomaniac like Putin.

At the very least, worldwide respect for the Ukranian people has to be skyrocketing.

I was thinking the same thing. But, holy shit, I’ve got to admire the big brass balls the Ukrainian people possess and wonder how they manage to walk anywhere with them.

Ukrainians clang when they walk.

I really hope “go fuck yourself” becomes a rallying cry.

That’s nothing. Check out this video of Ukrainians putting themselves in front of operating tanks to try and stop them.

I think the next point to be made is that Zelenskyy is a good actor…

Actually, I know little about Zelenskyy. I do believe that Reagan’s acting background served him well in public speaking and “acting presidential”. I did not like many of Reagan’s politics or actions, but he even though he was at best a mediocre actor his skills did greatly assist his stage presence in front of a crowd or TV camera.
