Russia invades Ukraine {2022-02-24} (Part 1)

The Ukrainian tax agency has announced that captured Russian tanks, vehicles, and other materiel do not need to be declared as income.

That almost reads like an Onion article, but at this point I’m ready to believe just about anything.

Here’s the official announcement on the Ukraine government website;

https://nazk.gov.ua/uk/documents/roz-yasnennya-vid-28-02-2022-2-shhodo-zastosuvannya-okremyh-polozhen-zakonu-ukrayiny-pro-zapobigannya-koruptsiyi-stosovno-zahodiv-finansovogo-kontrolyu-v-umovah-voyennogo-stanu/?hilite=&fbclid=IwAR2NB3_XEppdlniw6zwPbcJqC1fwuDJrawbiVe0XX54cZBwN_IdtZY61aQc

Which, per Google translate, says in part;

After 2020, I’m used to real news reading like it came from the Onion or the Babylon Bee. :slight_smile:

How do you assign a fair value to a captured tank, anyway? Is there a depreciation schedule?

General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces:

As of 6:00 a.m. on March 2, the 7th day of Russia’s war in Ukraine, Russian forces are trying to advance in all directions, but are resisted by Ukraine’s military everywhere and are suffering losses.

Unsuccessful in advancing its forces, Russian forces continue to launch missile and bomb strikes in order to intimidate the civilian population, which is fighting courageously side by side with the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The value of scrap metal in Ukraine has tanked .

Was watching a Ukranian propaganda video aimed at enemy troops, and I thought, the basic messages never change, do they? I expect if you could compare this to propaganda made in any war in modern history (maybe even before), you’d be able to see similar notes being hit, similar basic themes.

I guess it speaks to how unchanging human nature and instinct are, or of how everyone has the same basic needs and wants, despite differences in nationality, race, etc. Or maybe it’s just a tragic reminder that humanity has been at war its entire existence, and yet we still refuse to learn from it…

The Russians are now 160 miles from their start point inside Crimea. The encirclement in the South is complete and Odessa is Ukraines only link to the sea.

I read it the same way you did: organic as synonym for “their very own”, or “included”…

Things you eventually realise… about that video of the woman telling the soldier to put sunflower seeds in his pockets.

The sunflower is the national flower of Ukraine.
:sunflower:

From Wikipedia’s article on the Russo-Japanese War:

“The loss of life without victory and the humiliating defeat for the Russian Empire contributed to growing domestic unrest which culminated in the 1905 Russian Revolution and accelerated the disintegration of the Russian autocracy.”

Could history repeat itself? (Or at least rhyme?)

Thanks for this link, I’ve followed this twitter account to balance the flow of “Ukrainian-positive” stories I’ve been reading lately.
I think (at risk of coining a “Frodo-unit”) that the next week is going to be decisive in this conflict, if, say next Wednesday Kiev and Kharkiv are still in Ukrainian hands that would mean that the war would be long and protracted, something I think Russia cannot afford.
On the other hand if both cities have fallen and the Russians suceed in defeating most organized resistance then I think that the war will probably short enough for the Russians to succeed, at least for minimal definitions of “succeed”.

Roggio is quite a shill for the US Military (ex marine, Iraq contractor\ if memory serves) so he can harldy be accused of being pro Russian.
He does have some good sources, I’ll grant.

Why not? The previous US President was pro-Russian. Quite a lot of members of Congress are pro-Russian. And of course there’s General Flynn…

Noted.

What the Russians and plenty of others don’t realize is that up until last week, Russia thought of the United States as its mortal enemy, while the United States thought of Russia as… just another country, when it bothered to think of it at all.

That was last week.

Regardless of who wins the shooting war, it’s clear the Ukrainians are winning the troll wars.

Mariupol is surrounded. Assault’s begun.
A very pro Russian city, since 2014 held down by large amount of Ukrainian regulars and National Guard, the latter including a literal Neo-Nazi Battalion,.
Not going to be pleasant.
