Russia invades Ukraine {2022-02-24} (Part 1)

And in Panama. Officer grabbed a CNN News crew, got on the live feed to get an ammo resupply.

I’m the guy who signs the orders and you sign for the deliveries when they arrive. I order a million widgets from a fake supplier and you confirm that they have been delivered when in fact, they never exist. Invoices are faked and the cash is shared out between you and me.

one of the reasons for being on SD !!! knowledgeable folk, fighting ignorance

Exactly the clip I thought of.

Yea, that was both excellent and hilarious.

Thanks @Steve_MB

I’d like to see what’s going thru Putin’s mind as the Ukrainians keep taking back territory that he just finished gloriously claiming he had annexed. I like to picture him as Snidely Whiplash. “Curses, foiled again!”

What a shit show. I am surprised a mistake was admitted and corrected.

The Guardian

I’m going to go out on a limb and guess the results of this citizen consultation…99% of respondents will say the borders should be drawn to include whatever areas (at that particular moment) are occupied by Russia.

It’s wonderful to see Ukrainian forces making significant territory gains before the annexation process is completed.

It reveals how ridiculous it is to attempt annexation before territory is secured or has any significant administrative control.

I saw a comment on CNN that mobilization is a major security risk. They’re giving rifles to men with little training or indoctrination. Their loyalties are not completely known. They could point those rifles in Moscow’s direction. It depends on how they react to the screwed up mess in Ukraine.

Several months ago, remember the big question was - ‘Ukraine has demonstrated they’re capable of defending, but are they capable of conducting an offensive?’ This was not an unreasonable question at the time. After all, their armed forces had no experience conducting large scale offensive operations, which can be quite complex. Now we can set all doubts aside.

One article that was linked here mentioned that the Ukrainians have had eight years of practice since 2014 to prepare for this, with good knowledge of how the Russian army normally fights and their doctrine, and have been putting those plans to good use.

I found this Russian soldiers story very interesting. He signed up for 3 months to pay debts. He trained a few weeks to drive a tank and was assured he would be in the 2nd line.

Well, the tank broke down during the trip and he spent nights fixing it. He was assigned to the front line and hit by a RPG day 1. No one from his side came to get him. He made a white flag out of TP and surrendered.

He’s helping Ukraine now. Evaluating and fixing captured Russian tanks. He’s pretty skilled at welding and other work. He’d like to eventually earn Ukrainian citizenship.

It shows the advantages of treating captured men fairly. You never know which ones have skills you need.

Interesting Channel. There’s a lot of intercepted phone calls and interviews of captured men.

Perhaps though, they are not giving them bullets.

That would be a wise choice

Especially if the conscripts arrive in Ukraine without winter gear, food, and supplies. Untrained men are going to be difficult to manage.

There are always bayonets – arme blanche.

Or fresh fruit.

“What about pointed sticks?”

bear in mind, a good percentage of those will also be alcoholic, etc…

This is very interesting - it means that Russia can put off declaring them as Russian territory for as long as they want. This allows them to save face when they don’t break out the nukes against Ukraine as it attacks those regions.

The glass half full side of me is hoping that this conflict might show that nukes can never be used without considerable geopolitical cost to the aggressor. And although recent years have shown that having some nukes is vital to keeping your own borders secure, there is absolutely no point in maintaining a large stock because there is no offensive use case for them.

I’m probably dreaming…

“Shut up!” Just eat the banana.

I’m hoping that back-channel conversations have trickled down to Putin that if nukes are used, NATO will obliterate any Russian military units in Ukraine, shoot down any plane over Ukraine and this process will probably take a week at most. I further hope that China has indicated that if Russia uses a nuke, all trade deals are off, and China will impose sanctions that will push Russia back to the stone age.
