Russia invades Ukraine {2022-02-24} (Part 1)

But if the Ukrainians wanted to use the bridge afterwards, they’d have to clear the area of their own mines. Another thought is that it might be a good idea to leave an escape route for light vehicle/foot traffic. Faced with “fight or die” (assuming surrender is not an option) they might as well fight. “Fight, die or run” ? “Leave that shit here! Let’s go!”

Anti-armor mines would trigger for almost any vehicle, so good luck escaping in a truck or a stolen car, or withdrawing your armor in good order. Hoof it out if you wish, with as much as you can carry.

Also, I think most artillery mines have a timed self-destruct to prevent mine clearing from being a long-term problem.

I was just reading up on this. I couldn’t find whether they could set the mines to turn off after only a couple of days, because they might want to quickly follow up and cross the bridge. Also, according to Wikipedia, an acceptable failure rate for self-destruct is 10%, so if even 1% of them are never turned off, it would still be too dangerous to reliably use immediately (not to mention possible Russian mines.)

So with a non-negligible failure rate, (if that’s true), it seems that self-destructing mines are more useful for reducing civilian casualties after the war rather than allowing the military to not have to sweep a known, but old, minefield during a war. But of course the details are probably secret so who knows what the failure rates and modes for self-destruct are.

Nice to see that neither the US nor Russia have signed the Mine Ban Treaty, although Ukraine apparently has.

Two Russians from Siberia have landed at a remote island in Alaska seeking asylum.

I’d been wondering myself but was too lazy to ask.

ADAM – Area Denial Anti-personnel Mine, a 155mm round with 36 mines.

They’re no good for deploying on pavement though – The mines shatter. Does gravel count?

Who’s going to break the news to Goderich?

Nevermind.

The weather info is above the capitals of the five provinces that Russia has now created from “annexed” Ukrainian land - the capitals being Yalta, Kherson, Melitopol, Donetsk and Luhansk. The weather is not shown for neighboring areas of Ukraine not under Russian control/“ownership”.

Correction - the capital of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea is at Simferopol, not Yalta.

Thirty six miles by boat from Siberia. That’s a nice quick trip to safety. Palin was probably really mad, since she could see them coming from her house.

When you live in a northern part of the US, they often show Canadian city temps. If you are in Minnesota during the winter you can be sure they will show you the temp at Igloolik. Usually about 1000 below zero, give or take a degree.

I wonder how much land Ukraine has to take back before Russia drops the “annexed” lands from their weather maps?

I like how Melitopol is the capital of Zaporizhzhia Oblast instead of Zaporizhzhia.

The RAAM devices have a battery run down to trigger self-destruct. A certain number of the mines have an anti-tampering sensor to discourage de-mining by soldiers just picking them up and moving them.

I noticed that as well.

The administrative centre of the occupation Zaporizhzhia Military-Civilian Administration is at Melitopol, rather than Zaporizhzhia, since that city, which is both larger and the traditional administrative centre of the province, is under Ukrainian control.

.

it keeps raining shit on russia …

interesting angle on the numbers involved, though …

The tank capture video is followed a few tweets down by a propaganda video

Which has a pretty funny tagline – “Our sunflowers don’t fertilize themselves.”

The Ukrainian propaganda effort is going to be studied for a long time. They’ve been just brilliant at it.

Yes, they have been. And Russian propaganda has been stuck in the 1940, at best.

I was wondering that. Here in Arizona no temps in Mexico are shown, possibly because the population density is pretty light until you get down to Mexico City. The only towns of note, Nogales, Agua Prieta, and Ciudad Juarez are right by the border and temps of their sister-cities, Nogales, Douglas, and El Paso, would match anyway.

Oof. Reminds me of that babushka handing out seed packets. I hope she’s still around.
