“Nice little satellite service you got there. Shame if all your launch services were nationalized.”
This is ridiculous. Other defense contractors are being paid for their hardware. Why should SpaceX have to foot the bill? Do you expect Boeing to provide free jets?
SpaceX has been one of the biggest force multipliers for Ukraine. Not only did they provide launch services to NASA, taking away Putin’s ability to use Roscosmos as blackmail against the U.S., they also offered to boost the ISS when Putin tried to use that to keep America from providing weapons to Ukraine. And Starlink, which wouldn’t exist without Musk, has made a massive difference for Ukraine’s war effort.
And SpaceX’s rockets are saving American taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars per year. Maybe billions.
Elon Musk is responsible for all of it.
You might want to take your shoes off when you walk inside.
On multiple axes, too. The US military used to be dependent on imported Russian engines (the RD-180, used on the Atlas V). Not so much now that the Falcon 9 is a reliable workhorse, with all of the major components made in the US. And then, with the retirement of the Shuttle, the US had been dependent on Russia for passenger flights to the ISS, with them cranking up the per-seat costs every year. Crew Dragon is now making regular flights.
Yes, exactly. Also, SpaceX donated a large number of Starlink terminals. There is disinformation flying around that SpaceX got paid handsomely for them, but they didn’t. SpaceX donated a huge number, then Ukraine bought more.
Elon Musk has probably done more for Ukraine’s war than any other non-Ukrainian individual outside of government. And he’s now getting attacked constantly by pro-Ukrainian people. It’s bizarre.
Modnote: please take further Musk discussion to a new thread or at least drop it here in the Breaking News thread.
Many systems begin well on the battlefield. After some time the opponent finds ways to mitigate or lessen them. Jamming and spoofing communications is a seasoned art. No surprise it happened with Starlink. Though it may have also had funding/help from military sources in development, this is the first real war experience. Failure was always a possibility. I am sure the Russian communications systems have also been subject to counter measures.
Sorry. I posted while the moderator warning was posted.
I know it’s old news, but I’m curious why some countries abstained on that vote. Fear of Russia?

Russia.forces fighting in center of town.
It’s frustrating that Ukraine is having success liberating towns elsewhere. But couldn’t stop this prolonged attack. Ukraine forces couldn’t make the Russians retreat.
It must be a tactical decision that Kherson is more important.
It’s sickening to think about the torture and killing that awaits people in Bakhmut…

Jesus Christ, Sam, the Ukrainian fighters pay for Starlink out of their own pockets.

I saw the mod note after posting and decided that these tweets are still relevant given they discuss the uses and economics of Starlink on the ground in Ukraine.
Stronger Modnote, you want to argue over Starlink/Musk, just start a new thread.

Looks like Putin has run out of missiles:
Drone dogfight, and a good example of the vision the driver has in a Russian APC.
Is there a quick way to have twitter translate to English? Chrome often has that option, but it doesn’t work with twitter.
One can use Google Translate with alternative Twitter front-end Nitter. It has various domain endings, including .it, .net and .eu.
Thank you, I’ll give that a try. It will be nice to read a entire twitter thread rather than piecing together a few posts here or there.
Father and son divided by war. Father is on a Russian base in Donetsk. The son fights for Ukraine. They exchange texts.
There has to be other similar stories. Russian and Ukraine people lived and worked together for several generations.
