Russia invades Ukraine {2022-02-24} (Part 2)

Because Putin wont go to anyplace that would do that. I’ll bet if he landed in Ukraine or Poland they would.

I mean, Putin won’t go within a normal-sized table distance of his most loyal subordinates. The chances of him setting foot in a nation that’s a signatory of the ICC treaty are less than zero.

The verdict will also give any future Russian government some leverage with the west, as they can hand over Putin as a show of good faith and in exchange for a relaxation of sanctions.

That’s not the point … Pinochet went there, b/c he thought he would be safe (he went for a medical procedure) … and he wasn’t … due to the legalities of internional treaties (spain asking england formally to detain/extradite him … GB just cant pretend this formal request (being pushed through diplomatic channels) didn’t happen and look away).

the same RISK might apply to Putin … (possibly not, due to the factual forces of power) … but the point is he cant run the risk of finding out. And any country outside of russia today is a big risk.

… and just like they got Al Capone on marginal matters, they might get P. for these “marginal wrongdoings” (which seem to be easy to prove/indict)

so, PUTINS WORLD JUST GOT A LOT SMALLER TODAY.

well, about half of it … but def. more peeved than the argentines …

… and about 25+ other european countries …

good point - he now is a potential pawn (in the big scheme of geopolitics)

Personally I think he’s been following Hitler’s playbook pretty close. He’s either going to sneak away to an undisclosed location or kill himself. The pitchforks are coming and he knows it.

On a side note, I saw a video of him hugging a soldier. It was truly cringe worthy. It looked like Voldemort hugging Malfoy.

And look how he wound up.

Hey! Pinochet was chilean, not argentinian.
Here we judged and jailed our dictators ourselves.

‘Tis but a flesh wound.

The Nazi’s had developed an upward firing line of mortars for the me163 rocket plane that would trigger from changes in light. They would fly under B-17’s and fire automatically when the bomber cast a shadow. It was too little too late in the war but it was a deadly weapon. They could cut a bomber’s wing off without the pilot having to time the shot.

It would be a nice addition to the drones.

Ouch! Sorry about that. A real brainfart on my behalf.

I can’t imagine Putin being arrested for trial by the ICC, which seems kind of toothless since they can’t actually arrest anyone.

Theoretically though, say the head of a medium power state like Belgium was wanted for war crimes by the ICC. Would the UN be safe grounds for him? How about a meeting of the EU? Or NATO? (that’s probably a no) Any chance of being arrested at meetings for these held in signatory countries.?

Hard to guess. One such case is

But that was after he’d been forced from office, and it was an ad hoc special tribunal rather than the ICC - and neither Sierra Leone nor Liberia are exactly key players in international governance.

I just can’t imagine a country not considering the arrest of their sitting head of state or government an act of war, ICC or no ICC. But if the arresting country is willing to face the consequences of war with a nuclear power, I say go for it.

Who’s going to issue the order? And they’d be nuking the country that Putin is being held in - probably at an undisclosed location. However I agree there’s almost a zero chance he will be arrested while head of state. But mostly because he will not travel to anywhere that would arrest him, so the speculation is moot.

I also don’t see Putin ceasing to be head of state until either natural or unnatural death. Maybe imprisoned after a coup, but if so, I don’t think it would be long before he fell out of a window or drank the wrong tea.

again, its not so much the act of detaining him … its about the ABSTRACT risk of being detained … that makes it impossible for him to travel to the… 123 countries which have signed this agreement …

… and I am fairly sure many russian politicians/top brass will be on a similar “list of people of interest” pretty soon.

so, this ICC move is not nothing, it is relevant - if only narrowing down an option-space for russian leadership

Even then, there is a precedent:

I’ll have to check the ICC statute … :grinning:

One thing with the Russian pilot getting a medal: It’ll encourage other pilots to try similar stunts in the future. While, this time, it worked out for the Russian pilot, usually it won’t. And so we’ll see the loss of some irreplaceable Russian fighters, for the cost of a few cheap unmanned American drones. I consider that a bargain.

Was he accused of being an ant?

Here’s an even better one, IMHO. (From Wikipedia: Oliver Cromwell’s head)

But I do think it unlike Putin will suffer any indignity like that. He is much too aware of the enemies he’s made.

Press on.
