Russia invades Ukraine {2022-02-24} (Part 2)

Well, Putin isn’t the only Russian we could “negotiate” with. At this point, I’m really hoping the CIA, or some similar organization, is working hard to find someone, anyone, in Russia with the means and motivation to take Putin out. That would be the fastest, best way to end this shit.

The area in question “across” the Dnipro from Kherson is comprised of large islands in a river delta. There are next to no roads. Lots of summer cottages accessible by boat only. While taking control of these islands is certainly advantageous to Ukraine in that it enables them to push Russian artillery further back, it’s not a proper bridgehead. There’s little to no likelihood that they can use it to mount attacks on the Oleshky or Hola Prystan. Useful for recon and sabotage operations, though.

And tying up Russian troops that could otherwise be deployed to areas more advantageous to Ukrainian counterattack.

Photos and news of Ukraine developing an automated gun turret that can be controlled by a Steam Deck (portable video game system) from up to 500m away. Note it still requires operator control, it’s not a sci-fi autogun quite yet.

In other Ukrainian military innovation news, a new underwater maritime drone has been unveiled:

Do you mean that in general–that any negotiation in any war is tantamount to surrender?

Or are you saying that only about any negotiations in RUS - UKR war?

I meant only about this particular war. I don’t see Putin accepting any kind of negotiatiated resolution. Sure, he may sign the paperwork, but he won’t stick by the terms of a treaty if it allows for an independent Ukraine. He’d just come up with another excuse to continue the war and make up some excuse to blame Ukraine for why he had to invade again. Putin won’t stop until he’s either at the NATO border or he loses on the battlefield. He’s not going to respect the terms of some print on a piece of paper, because pieces of paper don’t fight back.

Xi and Zelenskyy had a long telephone conversation yesterday. I bet that was an interesting talk.

“The Chinese president sought to reassure Ukraine that “mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity” was at the foundation of the two countries’ relationship.”

Given the number of pieces of paper recognising Ukraine’s sovereignty within the 1991 frontiers he’s already torn up (including at least one signed under his authority as President), one can only agree. There is no interlocuteur valable on the Russian side unless and until Putin changes 180 degrees or is replaced.

Another Russian general bites the dust.

How many does that make now?

It encourages the others, and there are lots of colonels running around.

Fired, not defenestrated or poisoned.

Pedantry, but Colonel-General is a very senior rank roughly equivalent to a U.S. Lieutenant-General (i.e. three star), way above a mere Colonel. There aren’t a ton of them.

Yet.

His replacement comes from the National Guard pool.

Those are certainly huge explosions but is where they took place consistent with JDAM delivery? My limited understanding is that aircraft dropping these things risk being shot down if they go high enough to get any kind of decent range after release.

Humor; it is a difficult concept. = )

Hyoo-mer? Hmmm…I’ll check my dictionary and get back to you .

Toss bombing: fly towards your target at low altitude but high speed. Climb sharply. Release the weapon while still climbing to toss the bomb upward and forward. Nose over into a diving half Cuban Eight turn, reversing course and getting back down to safe altitude with only a moment’s exposure to enemy air defenses. Especially since with the range of a JDAM, you may not be into the enemy air defense zone at all during release.

The link says “removed from his position”. Doesn’t say if that was on the window-sill.
