Russia invades Ukraine {2022-02-24} (Part 2)

I wonder if the MARKER guidance signal can be jammed? That would immobilize it. But it would need reprogramming to use a substitute controller system.

The Kornet missile is used by Hezbollah and Hamas.

Or targeted?

Someone torched an Su-24, and police didn’t know about it until they saw the video on Telegram.

Pretty daring work by somebody!

[UK Defence Secretary Ben] Wallace wrote to his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu in December, he said, to warn that further attacks [on civilian infrastructure] could result in the UK donating more capable weapons.

And so the UK has today donated long range cruise missiles with a range of 150 miles. The longest range of donated missiles until today was 50 miles (Himars), so this gives Ukraine capability to strike deeply into occupied territory using aircraft operating from a safe distance behind the front lines.

I wonder if that would give them the capability and range to strike the Kerch bridge

But they’ve just finished repairing it!

Might as well test the repairs for durability, then.

I predict more ammunition warehouse strikes. Russia moved them back beyond HIMARS range. The UK Storm Shadow missiles can reach them now.

It’d have to be a hell of a lot of ammo to be worth expending one of those. IMO HQs and military aircraft would be the best targets.

The UK probably gave Ukraine a small stock of missiles. Your correct that the missiles have to hit only the highest priority targets.

The USA is accusing South Africa of supplying Russia with arms. I’m sure several others are being watched closely.

I don’t know anything about this stuff, but reading the article a few of things struck me.

First, the news of this tanks deployment is based on an article from a Russian news agency which means that there is zero information content. It could be true or it could just be propaganda. Without an objective source we can’t make that determination.

Second, their description of the MARKER UGV reads like the advertising brochure of a new Tesla, which suggests to me that it was directly cut and pasted from the manufacturers press release (or second hand from the RIA Novosti who pasted it from the manufacturers press release). So it probably represents the aspirations rather than the capabilities.

Third, even if we take the description at face value, the idea behind them is that bunches of these little guys are supposed to be sent out to surround enemy tank formations. But if the Russians had bunches of these things they would have already deployed them. Chances are that they have a few prototypes that they are now desperate enough to deploy despite the fact that they haven’t actually been tested in field conditions. I doubt that this will be a game changer.

The deployment in Ukraine is a serious test of the Patriot system. So far it’s performing well.

Reports that an oil depot in Luhansk was hit tonight. Luhansk is an occupied city that was out of range of Ukrainian missiles. So we do we think that the UK storm shadows were used? They only announced their delivery today so if it was that missile the timing of the announcement is interesting.

Timing doesn’t feel right, unless the announcements were actually significantly after delivery.

Maybe sabotage, either partisan or special forces.

2000 miles from Ukraine. Either Zelenskyy’s Zeroes are even better crack commandos than we thought, or Putin’s grasp on his own country is finally breaking. Either one is good news.

Not an oil depot, reported to be a maintenance facility (or from Russian sources - “two disused factories”). No confirmation of weapon used. Two other possibilities:
“…But the city does fall within the roughly 93-mile range of the U.S. supplied Ground Launched Small Diameter Bombs (GLSDB) and at the edge of the range of Ukraine’s own domestically produced Vilkha-M guided rocket, which can reach up to about 68-miles away. You can read more about that unique weapon system here.”

Confirmation of another western munition used - “… Another advanced standoff weapon that seems to have appeared on the battlefield is the Miniature Air Launched Decoy (MALD), a U.S. mini-cruise missile that acts to confuse and distract enemy air defenses. This is a major reevaluation you can read about in our reporting here, and it could have been used in coordination with the supposed Storm Shadow attack.”

From this article about PATRIOT batteries in Ukraine.

If there was a long-range air-launched cruise missile raid by the Ukrainians, using Storm Shadows or other ALCMs, sending along some MALDs would greatly increase the likelihood of getting the missiles through the Russsians’ air defenses.
