Russia invades Ukraine {2022-02-24} (Part 2)

Not just indicted. Convicted in absentia at the ICC for the downing of MH17, sentenced to life in prison. He may now be wishing he’d opted for the Dutch prison cell rather than the Russian one.

I wonder if his cell will have a nice window.

His cell on the 25th floor.

Caged Girkin, with added “Yup, that’s me” meme:

Sappers are crucial for the counter offensive. Without them Ukraine can’t advance on the battlefield.

Not quite as amazing when one considers it’s literally life or death for them, their families, and their country.

The teachers never hear the students whine, why do I need to know this?

I’d be highly motivated to learn too.

Secretary of State Blinken applies the burn:

So what happens to de-fused mines? Are they stored away to be used later by the Ukrainians? Or are they not salvageable and destroyed/disposed of?

Anti-tank mines have a considerable explosive charge. We (US) used over one million mines at a single Iraqi storage site (objective Arlington) as donor charges to destroy artillery projectiles, missiles, bombs, RPGs, etc…

Another use is as a second or third layer below the top anti-tank mine with a good fuze. The double/triple charge would ensure the destruction of an enemy vehicle.

Useable mines with new or recovered fuzes could be employed elsewhere such as the border of Belarus.

cluster munition finally made it to the front

There is good reason we call him “A. Blinken”.

say it out loud

Missing the Abe Lincoln connection.

Honest Abe was known to have some wit. Although I’m not entirely sold on the comparison either.

Ukraine allegedly used cluster munitions on a Russian village.

Disappointing if it’s true.

Alleged by a Russian so it literally counts for nothing.

The tweet said the cluster munition was from an MLRS. The US has not supplied any MLRS ammo with cluster munition warheads. I wouldn’t put much stock in the Russian Governor’s statement.

Note that cluster munitions have independant multiple bomblets or grenades; each with its own fuzing and explosive charge. A HIMARS round with a billion bb warhead is a unitary fragmentation warhead. (Not that the distinction is important to someone targeted by either).

The train service is temporarily halted. There is another ammo depot up in smoke. (The headline says fuel depot and the article says ammunition depot.)

So it appears that Russia continues to use it’s limited ammunition to try to terrorize civilian populations, while Ukraine is using it’s limited ammunition to destroy military targets that harm Russia’s war effort.

Generally in the past, terror tactics against civilian populations have not been incredibly successful strategically.

Could their timing be any worse? A bit tone deaf huh? Russia just cut off grain to undeveloped countries. But, the hungry can watch Russians dance.

I imagine it depends on just how much of a hurry you are to deal with the mine. When you’re clearing the first path to (hopefully) break through the enemy line, you want to get rid of them as quickly as possible, and the quickest way to get rid of a mine is usually to detonate it in place. On the other hand, once the front has shifted past and you have control of the territory the mines are in, you can take your time to salvage them intact (or intact-ish) for reuse.
