The mention of Stryers and Marders in the same sentence like that has real cold war vibes to it. Like I’m playing Twilight 2000 with my high school friends back in the 80’s.
Traveled to Washington and got a T-shirt and 325 million. Not bad for a quick weekend trip.
The intelligence the public has been receiving has been poor. We don’t know what intelligence governments have been receiving.
Also, the Russian’s don’t necessarily want the West to have accurate information.
Although this special military operation has shown that the Russian bear is more similar to Pooh than a grizzly, it is not a completely Keystone Kops operation. There are undoubtedly many competent or better people working there to advance the interests of their country.
Ukraine launched a missile attack against the Black Sea fleet headquarters in Sevastopol. The base was reportedly struck with several French Storm Shadow missiles, and was on fire.
Sleeper Cell of Russian Spies in Ukraine Smashed After Coded Messages Intercepted
Knewz.com is reporting that the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) seized a four-member deep-cover team that had been activated to gather intelligence on Kyiv’s troop movements and weapons deliveries. …
The operation to uncover the sleeper cell began when the SBU intercepted messages asking for updates from the spies.
It seems to me that the British had a strategy for dealing with spies. Turn the spies into double-agents to pass misinformation to the Germans, or take them outside and shoot them. I haven’t heard of Ukraine executing anyone, but I do wonder how many spies they’ve turned.
It appears that Tucker Carlson is getting his own show on Russian state TV:
Could they mean he’ll be interviewed this weekend? I can’t see the screengrabs on this computer.
It looks like the title logo for a show. Russian state TV plays clips of Carlson a lot. He’s certainly been offered jobs on Russian state media:
U.S. to provide some “attack 'ems” missiles to Ukraine:
There are reports that high-ranking officers were meeting when the Black Sea Fleet HQ in Sevastopol was struck. There are rumors that the commander of the Black Sea Fleet, Admiral Sokolov, was killed.
If so, that seems unlikely to be a lucky coincidence.
Video of strike:
Unless Storm Shadow/SCALP can cause explosions prior to arriving at their target (which, to be clear, would be an excellent capability in a missile), it’s pretty clear that multiple missiles got through to the target. The performance of the S-400 air defense wunderwaffe these past couple weeks might be causing a little buyer’s remorse in purchasers of the export version.
Don’t forget that the Ukrainians managed to knock some of those out in that general area.
Of course that just transfers the concern from “S-400 can’t protect critical targets” to “S-400 can’t protect themselves”. Especially since the current theory is that those batteries got hit by ancient Neptun cruise missiles.
Zelenskiy received a much warmer welcome in Canada. He collected more money for the war effort.
Inverse causality missiles would be great! You’d only bother to fire them after you found out they blew up your target.
But through extensive research into the system’s development and use, bolstered by expert assessments from a variety of nations, there are two seemingly counter-intuitive conclusions about the S-400 that we can draw.
First: the system is not nearly as capable as it is often perceived to be. Second: It is, nonetheless, among the most capable air defense systems in use today.
From here.
There is no such thing as the perfect system. I think folks get way to hyped up about both anecdotal failures and successes of various pieces of military hardware. I mean HIMARS, with or without ATACMS, are not magical keys to the battlefield and Russian tanks are not utter crap. What is true is that HIMARS are highly effective for certain purposes when used properly and most Russian tanks have some serious design vulnerabilities.
So with the S-400 and other higher tier SAM systems. They’re not magic bullets, but they’re pretty decent at what they’re designed to do. But what they are not designed to do is be 100% effective, while also being 100% invulnerable. The Russians would love it if they were, but they’re not. They’re just a petty decent, but very imperfect air defense system. A few successes or failures here or there really doesn’t change that equation.
Taurus cruise missiles on the way, 96 reportedly. Longer range, 500 km (300 mi), bigger two stage warhead for hardened targets dual stage 480-kilogram (1,100 lb). Intended targets are hardened bunkers; command, control, and communications facilities; airfield and port facilities; ammunition storage facilities; ships in port or at sea; area target attack and bridges. Any bridge in particular?
