Russia invades Ukraine {2022-02-24} (Part 2)

Definitely. I think I read that Canada has the 3rd largest number of people of Ukrainian descent, coming after Ukraine and then Russia.

Ukraine military intelligence chief claims…

Interview with Kyrylo Budanov, head of Ukrainian military intelligence and subject of a thousand memes:

Romanchuk: My chest have much metal.
Ukraine: Hold our beer…

Slowed down and enhanced video of HQ Scalping. Definite 2nd missile.

May be a third coming in from a wider view.

Wow. I wonder what the real casualty figures are.

Probably pretty steep. It looks like there could be a lot of windows in that building. Lot of windows.

And Poland is in a snit due to Ukranian grain prices…

So, I’m betting this gets settled in a week or so, deals get done, and help continues. But what I know about Eastern European politics is…about as much as the rest of you do. Guess we’ll have to see.

Damn, I thought I’d read they’d worked things out already. I really hope that relationship doesn’t erode.

That seems incredibly stupid of Poland. The reason why grain prices from Ukraine are high right now is because there’s a friggin’ war going on. You don’t like that, then do what you can to end the war quicker.

Not to mention that, if Russia were somehow against all odds to beat Ukraine, Poland is the next slice of the salami.

My limited (and possibly mistaken) information/impression is that some of what’s coming from Poland is connected to upcoming elections, elections where support from the agricultural sector, and some of the more nervous general population, is important.

I also gather this spat has irritated other EU members, with most of the ire directed at Poland (although of course some is on Ukraine).

For all that the EU can unite Europe it’s wise to remember that the EU really is composed of separate nations each with the own priorities and internal politics.

Meanwhile, Putin will use this to “show” how the West is divided, squabbling, etc. Well, yes, the nations of the West do have their disagreements but that doesn’t mean they won’t join together against a common threat.

Poland is always annoying the wider western EU. They’re almost as fractious and contrarian as Hungary. It’s been this way forever.

A deeper dive into the cultural, political, and historical reasons why should be taken to another thread. But for this context, it’s unsurprising that they look for ways to go against the grain.

High prices apparently isn’t what bothers them. From the linked article

Poland, Hungary and Slovakia said the new ban on Ukrainian grain importswas put in place to protect their farmers from a glut of Ukrainian grain in their markets, which lowers prices and hurts their livelihood.

Not that that detracts from your broader point.

Right. My understanding is that because the Black Sea route is limited, there’s been more traffic westward up the Danube and by rail/train.

Latest I read on CNN, the Russians are still claiming only one “soldier” casualty. Meanwhile, the Ukrainians have a somewhat different take, which seems more in line with what the video showed.

“The daring and painstaking work of the Special Operations Forces enabled them to hit the Black Sea Fleet headquarters ‘on time and with precision’ while the Russian Navy’s senior staff was meeting in the temporarily occupied city of Sevastopol,” it said in the statement.

“The data was transmitted to the Air Force for strike. The details of the attack will be revealed once it is possible. The result is dozens of dead and wounded occupiers, including the senior leadership of the fleet,” the statement read.

It added, “We are moving further!”

Since the start of the invasion, Russia has reportedly lost 25 combat aircraft and 9 helicopters within Russian territory to non-combat reasons:

And in sporting news:

They can’t use them inside Russia. But the Russian HQ and weapons Depot inside Ukraine and Crimea will be ripe targets.

Pun intended?

we somehow must separate the wit from the chaff
