Russia invades Ukraine {2022-02-24} (Part 2)

Yep. Mid September attack on the Sevastopol shipyard

I thought that neither side was using their airforce very much. How did Russia lose over 300 jets?

Shot them down themselves?

And some I imagine have been damaged in airport sabotage and drone attacks.

Oryx has confirmed a total of 78 Russian combat aircraft destroyed (and 70 Ukrainian). Those Ukrainian tweets are pure propaganda and should be taken with a mighty grain of salt.

Thanks, that’s what I was thinking.

Yeah, about a month ago, they hit a Kilo class sub that was in drydock at Sevastopol, probably using Storm shadow missiles

Ukraine destroys Russian GPS-jamming system… using a GPS-guided bomb:

I wonder perhaps if the bomb was guided by GLONASS, which the Russians would be more reluctant to jam. Or it could have simply homed in on the interference transmitter.

I don’t think anything uses just GPS. Modern electronics that do location services typically use all three major satellite systems, and WiFi, and cell towers, and magnetometers, and integrated accelerometers, and anything else they can think of. I’d expect a guided munition would have technology at least as good as what’s in a phone.

Or, maybe, a phone. They would be kind of like voicemail, only louder.

:golf clap:

Sometimes I wonder at what point the losses of young(ish) men create a significant demographic crisis for Russia. But that’s for another thread.

Some discussion of the demographic issue here (last June):

Thanks. I had forgotten about the mass exodus. Quite an interesting thread there.

I assume 1/3 are dead, 1/3 are injured, and the final third are made up. But even at that it’s still a stunning number of casualties.

And half of them are prisoners.

I think the UK Defence Ministry at one point (a few months ago) said that they thought the Ukrainian estimates were broadly accurate. However you may or may not wish to also believe the UK’s claims in this matter.

Do you mean half of them were Russian convicts before entering combat, or that half of them are now held by the Ukrainians in Ukrainian POW camps?

I didn’t try to quote. This entire interview with Ukraine’s 4 star general sums up the war and why its at a stalemate.

It’s no surprise that the General strongly recommends increased air power.

Mine clearing is extremely difficult. The Russians can mine cleared areas again from a distance.
