Sad news in Ohio...

Usually I won’t post just links to a news story, but this happened today in the town I commute to for college.

Quick summary: Man stabs woman early this morning, then goes to the school where his estranged wife is a teacher and stabs her, then shoots her, around 9. He barricaded himself inside a house in town and police surrounded, then he shot himself. The whole thing has been on ONN, WSAZ, and others.

I drove past the house at 9:45-ish, but thought the police were just there for a wreck or something. When I left the university a few hours later there were choppers all over and special unit vans were flying down the highway.

It is reported that the teacher is in stable condition some places, critical condition others. My heart goes out to the kids at the school though, and the teacher.

I’ve been hearing all about it today. It’s been on the radio, and they have sent around news update emails to everyone here at work. I hadn’t heard that he stabbed someone else though. Another woman from the one he shot at the school I guess. Unless she has a really strong work ethic and went in anyway. :stuck_out_tongue:

My wife goes to SSU. She sent me an email earlier saying that she saw all the SWAT vans and stuff around that house.

From what I’ve found, the woman stabbed early this morning was the sister of the teacher. It was the only thing on the radio when I was in town today (99.3 in Portsmouth, WNXT working with WSAZ) but I drive through Jackson on my way home and 96.7, the main station there, had no update on it at noon. They may have by now though. It’s incredibly weird feeling, honestly, just because it always seems to be on the news in other places, and I know Portsmouth isn’t the best town, but wow…

Here’s my mundane, pointless thought, in response to your mundane pointless thought:

It’s too bad someone stabbed his estranged wife in Podunk, but this type of thing goes on everyday in every state in the union.

The only difference is that you were there to witness the aftermath. I’m not sure what you’re after here. The fact that you mention it was on “ONN” (whatever that is) and WSAZ makes it seem like you think it was a “Big Deal”.

It’s not. It happens everywhere, all the time.

I guess I’m just kind of pointing it out. It’s not the biggest deal, but it is still sad to hear that it happened. I would feel just as bad if it had happened in Kentucky, West Virginia, New York, or whatever. I guess it’s not even that I was there to see the aftermath, but that it sucks it happened in front of kids.

ONN is the Ohio News Network. And the guy actually shot his estranged wife…at her school. That doesn’t happen every day.

Sad but true. About 1/3 of female murder victims are killed by an intimate (or formerly intimate) partner. Pretty disgusting.
